FAQs about hotels in Galway

Cracking City of Craic

Welcoming Galway is a small city with fantastic nightlife and an infectious atmosphere. Outside of the Galway Arts Festival, there’s still plenty of live music in the Irish pubs to get the party started.

The Galway Races at Ballybrit Race Course west of Galway Airport attract a good crowd, as does Eyre Square, a green space with flags of previous ruling families who gave it its nickname - City of Tribes. To the south are cobbled streets housing brightly colored shops and restaurants.

Sights in Galway include its cathedral and city museum which has an interesting insight into the history of the city and Ireland. Lynch’s Castle is the last remaining 17th-century merchant house, and the Spanish Arch is a small section of city walls by the Corrib River, linking Galway Bay to huge Loch Corrib. Where river and ocean meet is Claddagh Park, a great spot for a picnic with a view.

Further around the coast is Salthill Promenade, home to Atlantaquaria, Ireland’s national aquarium, focussing on sealife off Irish shores. It’s a Christmas Day tradition to jump from Blackrock Diving Tower nearby into the icy Atlantic Ocean, though you may well spot some wag giving it a go.

We prefered to eat and drink in the West End and stayed clear of Shop Street other than when we hit the artists market where we could get locally made stuff. We had great food at Universal and grabbed drinks at the Bierhaus. We listened to fabulous music at the Crane- go for the experience (go upstairs) if nothing else! If you want to go to the Aran Islands, I recommend the Aran Island Ferries. They leave right from Galway Docks and take you to Inishmore. You get about 4 hours on the island (enough to take a horse and cart (a must!) to Dun Aonghasa and back but not much else) then it picks you up and returns via the Cliffs of Mohr. If you want longer or want a different island you'll have to go to one of the other ports (Doolin or Rossaveel) that will take you a while to get to. The weather was incredible, so we were outside the whole time and walked on the promendade to Salthill each night. We didn't have a car- the traffic was pretty heavy, so I was very glad we were on foot. If you do have a car, I would recommend parking at wherever you are staying and walking everywhere else if possible. If we had more time we would have ventured to Spiddal and to Connemara National Park, but we felt we had enough time to see Galway itself.

Galway is a beautiful town with many, many things to see and do. There seemed to be a lot more young people (teens, early-twenties) out and about in Galway than we noticed in our other destinations. The streets and pubs of the Latin Quarter were crowded on a Monday, which is great but surprising! The area we visited was very walkable with lots of shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities. It's easy to get lost/turned around here, but everyone is helpful in pointing you in the right direction.

I really enjoyed my 3 night stay here! The suites were clean, the bed was comfortable, and everything was very quiet. Being a bit outside of the city meant no noise. It's about a 15 minute walk to the city center and it's an easy walk (no need to cross any major streets). There's free parking below the building as well. I was originally a bit nervous about staying in repurposed college dorms (US college dorms are, in general, not nice), but this functions as a great hotel and I would recommend it to anyone.

Room was spacious and all amenities expected were provided. The included breakfast was great and the service staff was friendly and attentive. Location is perfect for those with a rental car touring Ireland. The hotel has its own parking area and it's only a 20 minute or so walk to downtown Galway, which is very busy with car traffic and is a hard place to find parking. The Menlo Park Hotel is an excellent place to stay just outside of the city center for a good value.

The staff was extremely nice from check-in to check-out. They were helpful and friendly. The hotel overall was clean and modern and had a cool vibe. There is plenty to do with the swimming pool, sauna, steam room, and plunge barrels. A well-equipped gym with recovery aids and a Boditrax scanner. The two restaurants were also very nice, I tried food from both, and they met my expectations. Great place to relax. Galway city center is a 2 minute walk and is very safe.

The room was a really nice size and had lots of outlets so you could charge up your phone, camera battery etc. The bathroom was pretty big too. The staff was very kind during check in and check out. They also let me check in at 7 pm as we had taken a ferry tour in the morning so subject those times. The location is great because you're right in salthill but the bus is just outside that will take you to the city centre for about 2 euros.

The hotel exceeded expectations. The room size was very decent (there are a lot of reviews that it's small, but maybe we just got lucky with the room). Room and hotel itself clean and cozy. Location can't be better - in the heart of an old city center, close to nice restaurants, pubs and historical landmarks. It's probably little noisy when the weather is good, but we stayed during the rain, so it was very quite.

We had the absolute best time at the Balcony House! Teresa is the sweetest host - she made us feel so welcome and right at home in Galway. The rooms are small, but comfortable and clear. The shared kitchen facilities are also great, which made breakfast prep quite a bit easier. It's a nice, quiet location outside of the city center.
