The house had everything we needed and was very clean and spacious. It is a traditional house so rooms had tatami and futons. Restaurants and stores were within walking distance and there was parking close by. We will be back.

The staff were great and very informative about the location and transport options etc. An absolute must stay if you are near the area. The food was incredible for breakfast and dinner, very traditional and gorgeous meat. The private baths are the best we went in, the fact they are private is a massive plus. We had the best time here; thank you to all the staff! It is also really close to the bus station to get to the Kamikochi Valley.

The stay itself was the highlight of our trip to Japan. We’re already in another city and still keep thinking about it! The room was very spacious, the beds were amazing, and the little terrace—plus the private onsen—was just unbeatable. Imagine soaking in the onsen while looking out into the forest. It’s incredibly calming. We also recommend trying the local breakfast and dinner (book in advance); it’s a truly exceptional culinary experience. Thank you so much for the best stay in the world! Reopened after renovation in 2022, Auberge Hidanomori is situated in quiet hills, a 10-minute shuttle ride from JR Takayama Station. The property offers free WiFi access in rooms and in public areas including the shared TV lounge and the terrace. What an exquisite place. We spent two blissful nights here and from start to finish felt coddled and cared for by the lovely, gracious family who own and run the auberge. Our room was spotlessly clean and comfortable, with the highest quality bedding and softest pyjamas imaginable (I had to buy some to take home!). The food was absolutely top-notch, five-star by any rating, as good as anywhere in the world (I’m talking NYC, London, Paris). The wine pairings were delicious, unusual, well thought through (and natural). The design was beautiful, clean, understated and very very cool with lots of locally crafted furniture. The service was attentive and kind, and we had everything we needed provided for us. Lastly the private onsen was a delight and always available when we wanted it. What a lovely, intimate hideaway—on the outskirts of Takayama, shuttle from and to station provided, making it very easy. Thank you Toshi and Keiko and family—this was an unforgettable stay.

Offering traditional Japanese-style accommodation with spacious public baths, Yatsusankan Over 6 years old is a 6-minute walk from JR Hidafurukawa Train Station. WiFi is accessible at public areas for free, while the private-use hot spring bath is available at a surcharge. What an amazing hotel! feels like you go into the film spirits away. The staff are very professional and very friendly. The food is the top level!

Location, private onsen in the suite, kaiseki dinner is elegant and delicious, so is the delicious breakfast, both served in our room, it’s a great experience. The staffs are very warm and helpful. It gave free entrance ticket to the big public onsen which is a great extra benefit.
