Guests at Jizokan Matsuya Ryokan stay in rooms with shoji paper screens and traditional futon bedding. All rooms are air-conditioned and include a TV and slippers. Best location we stayed at in a 2 week holiday in Japan. The other hotels we used were all conventional ones and we wanted to stay in at least on Ryokan and chose this one. The location is perfect, really close to Zenkoji Temple which is the most historic area in Nagano, with lots of really nice shops to explore. The room was perfect and we really enjoyed the traditional Japanese breakfast

Nunoya Ryokan is in a beautiful old japanese house - with a great atmosphere and very friendly staff and a lovely small lounge, in a typical Matsumoto street. We had a beautiful tatami room and slept on futons, it was quiet and comfortable, and breakfast was very good, with choices for lovers of japanese or western breakfast. Loved it.

The ryokan is located in a geothermal area, with a number of hot springs nearby for guests to relax in. Authentic ryokan atmosphere. The staff was extremely kind. The food was very good and different from anything we have tried in Japan. The location is perfect for easily visiting Matsumoto’s main attractions.

This place is superb and authentic Japanese. The host is a beautiful and kind human being that does her absolute best to look after you.

An incredible once in a life time authentic Japanese experience with charming hosts in an beautiful natural setting. The arrival lounge, onsen and breakfast room with the view towards the falls and the sound of them roaring while you soak in the onsen are spectacular. The food and presentation by the host Koike-san was delicious and a work of art and the dining room with an irori (indoor fire pit) was a special treat as was the Japanese breakfast. I only eat fish and poultry which was accommodated beautifully but Koike-san specialists in wild meats including local boar so for guests who love that, I am sure it would be delicious. (Note - we had one beer each and that was charged separately, cash only). Koike-san picked us up from the Tsumago carpark number 1 after we walked the Nakasendo Trail from Magome to Tsumago and he dropped us off the next day at the Nagiso train station where we caught the express train around 11am back to Nagoya.

We stayed in the Japanese style room with a beautiful view of the garden and mountains. We went several times to the private onsens without ever having to wait. We really felt that we were living an experience. The people working in the facilities are also incredible. We didn’t have time enough to book the dinner so they took us for free to the only restaurant available around, which was amazing.

This is a traditional ryokan and therefore it’s important to assess it on its own terms. It’s not a luxury hotel, but it is a lovely place to stay. The staff were wonderful, our room was huge and comfortable, the onsen was beautiful and the food was outstanding. I loved the traditional yukata and samue they provided, and the beauty products in the onsen were great. The location is very good- an agricultural town with fields surrounded by mountains- but it is next to a road so it’s not the most scenic. That said, it is very close to an amazing shrine that is one of the most beautiful holy places I have ever experienced.

Berg Marukaneya is located in Nozawa Onsen, 2 km from Lake Hokuryuko. The ryokan is a 3-minute walk from the nearest ski field and has a ski pass sales point. Guests can enjoy a meal at the restaurant. A free public hot spring bath facility called Nakao-no-yu is a minute's stroll away. Great location 2 minute walk to the lift and 10 minutes from downtown.
