Not a fault of the hotel but San Francisco is a somewhat challenging place to visit. The Union Square area offers some of the better hotels but the attractions around Union Square tend to be fancy stores that we have no interest in. We had to travel to get to the things and places we wanted to see. (The hop-on-hop-off tour bus helped but it's slow working through all the stops just to get to another destination). While it's easy to get Ubers and public transportation near by, it's not great that you have to travel to get everywhere. We arrived and departed by Amtrak and it's not easy to get to Emeryville where the train comes in. (Amtrak does offer a shuttle bus that gets you not too far from the hotel.) We did some walking around the hotel to get to restaurants and a couple of local stores. It's definitely an urban vibe complete with all that entails (street people, noise, dirt, etc.). A bit hard to truly relax.

The Handlery provided a good base of operation for a two-day visit to San Francisco. The hotel itself was clean and the room was comfortable. The bathroom was a bit small but everything worked and met our needs. Staff was helpful and attentive. Having doormen inside and out adds a level of confidence in a downtown urban scene. Lots of things to see and do nearby but again, it's a big city vibe so you always have to keep your head on a swivel. I appreciated having restaurants within walking distance and the meeting spots for the two bus tours we took were just a block away each.

The room we were allocated when we first arrived for a 5 night stay, we asked to be moved on day 2 as small, dark, with wire on windows, very depressing.

We had frosted windows that were old and when we opened it there was a lot of rubbish on the window sill. The mattress was very hard & only 3 small pillows between 2 people.

The location was perfect for seeing around San Francisco. The staff were lovely & helpful

We were in back part of hotel and had to use a very little lift to get our bags up to the next floor, otherwise it was carry our heavy bags up two flights of stairs. Lift stopped about a metre from top, and we had to lift our bags up to get them out the top and then climb up and out of the lift. Once in room, my husband used bathroom and closed the door which jammed and I had to pretty much try and kick the door down to get the door open again. Didn't close door for rest of stay. Mentioned both incidents to staff and we got brushed off.

Location was nice and central and our room was quiet, clean and very comfortable. A morning swim in the pool was a nice bonus. On site parking was a big plus and the parking valets very helpful and although it’s probably the going rate for SF just be aware that the onsite parking isn’t cheap, but certainly way easier than parking offsite.

Its central to Union Square. There’s a lot of restaurants and bars around. I love the staff. The filipinos there rock! The two front desk i think it was Joan and Carl were amazing. The parking attendants were great too!!

The bathroom and in particular the shower. My room was on the 8th floor. The shower water pressure was very poor and neither the hand held low shower nor the fixed shower ( fixed at a useless angle) were helpful or effective. There was no shower at the pool. So no alternative. The shower was a great disappointment and needs upgrading. So do the curtains in the bedroom which are torn.

An excellent location. Good sized room with comfortable bed. All the Service was excellent and my room was always very well cleaned. I liked and used the heated pool. I liked to fill my water bottle each day from the ice cold water in the lobby.

It's given that it is an old building but lighting in the hallways could be improved as it is quite dim. Otherwise it is not a dealbreaker for me. My stay was pleasant overall.

Location was very convenient right in the heart of Union Square. Close to all points of interest for the regular tourist. For the size of the room we got it was reasonably priced.

Parking is very expensive compared to usual hotel parking, should be reviewed. Should put better signs for pools and parking as it’s a bit of a maze.

Perfect location next to Union Square and access to the tram and metro. Airport reachable by metro is great. Pool was nice and rooms were big. Not much noise and the parking was a plus to have.

The bathroom door didn’t close. It wasn’t able to fit in the frame. The bathroom was very dated. The beds were a little too firm for my taste but I still slept well.

It was conveniently located to food, bars, shopping and restaurants. It’s located right in union square so it’s very convenient. The room was extremely clean and neat. The products smelled amazing.

Room with 2 doule beds was a little small for 4 travelling with cases etc - but manageable for a short stay.
