FAQs about hotels in California
The American Dream
From the searing depths of Death Valley to the snow-capped peaks of the Lake Tahoe mountains, California is a wonderful US state that sums up the American Dream. Nowhere is this more evident than Los Angeles, the home of Hollywood and many stars who grace its red carpets.
In the south-west, Anaheim has a great range of Californian hotels near Disneyland where the magic of the movies comes to life. Sun-drenched San Diego, located close to the Mexican border in the state's south-western tip, is a popular spring break destination as is Palm Springs in a valley surrounded by rugged mountains.
In the well-known wine region of the Napa Valley the vineyards produce some fantastic wines, while Monterey is best known for its spicy cheese and the beautiful coastline that becomes the Big Sur coastal drive. Another driving adventure is the fabled Route 66 and parts of it pass through California, ending at Santa Monica pier.
Along the coast is beautiful Santa Barbara, and further north San Francisco is home to a good proportion of Californian hotels with indoor pools on Booking.com. The Golden Gate city is set around an exclusive bay which ends at Silicon Valley in San Jose, while famous Berkeley University is just across the water. The stunning natural beauty of Yosemite National Park is further east, while Sacramento is to the north-east.

- From US$1,147.27 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.1Superb - What previous guests thought, 184 reviewsWhere do I start. Firstly I cannot write this review without giving a huge shout out to Sandra who is one of the lovely staff at Surf and Sand Resort - she made our trip extra special and sent some wine and cheese up to our room and also booked Nobu for us which was incredible as it was impossible to get a booking otherwise. As soon as we walked in I felt like a celebrity. We were greeted with amazing staff on the front desk, they upgraded our room with a small fee which was so worth it. Without even going into the Hotel itself the staff make it the most amazing experience. This Hotel is the only one on Laguna beach which is on the sea front, you can hear the waves crashing - our room was right on the water. The food in the Hotel was impeccable, you seriously need to try the breakfast burrito & French toast - OMG! On our first night we went for dinner and the food and cocktails were insane! I would seriously go back every year to this Hotel if I could. Excited to visit again! It is always fully booked so we were so lucky to have got a room! The best Hotel I have visited for sure! also the pool was incredible !Guest review byKurtulaUnited Kingdom
- From US$601.75 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.1Superb - What previous guests thought, 287 reviewsSanctuary Beach Resort was and absolute highlight of our trip! The location is stunning, right on the beach with breathtaking ocean views and direct access to the sand. Our bungalow-style room was beautifully designed, spacious, and had a private balcony where we could relax and watch the waves. The resort’s peaceful atmosphere made it the perfect place to unwind. We loved the fire pits in the evening, creating a cozy and romantic setting. The staff was friendly and attentive, ensuring we had everything we needed. The on-site restaurant served delicious meals with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. If you’re looking for a serene and luxurious escape along the California coast, Sanctuary Beach Resort is a must-visit!Guest review byClo BoucheritFrance

Los Angeles is an exciting place full of interesting landmarks, although I found it a bit ran down. Central Los Angeles is full of homeless people and dirty streets, which made me sad. Other than that it's a multicultural city with a fascinating history. I wouldn't recommend visiting in the summer, though: heat and humidity are unbearable; there are repairs and diversions on the bus routes and public services seem to work slower. All in all, I enjoyed my stay, I would definitely come back. Also, people are super friendly and it feels safe.Guest review bySaraPeru - 10.0

Downtown area has cleaned up a lot, compared to few years ago. Much more people at night. Even Union Square felt very safe (and clean) unlike few years back. The city is putting in much needed effort to clean up the downtown area. Would stay away from Tenderloin area though. Ferry building area is hopping as well.Guest review byKazz - 10.0
I wish I would have had more time to see everything.
I wish I would have had more time to see everything. Old Town was awesome, We had Mexican at Casa Del Fred's and it was amazing. The harbor is a must see. I was just in Aww of the scenery everywhere we went. I would love to go back to San Diego and keep exploring. Coming from Arkansas its was very different but very inviting.Guest review byStephania - 10.0
The city was clean and nice.
The city was clean and nice. We felt safe walking late at night. There were some mental heath homeless people at night. But durning the day we did not see anyone sketchy. Everyone was pleasant and friendly. We has a car and were able to see other areas that were not as well kept as Anaheim. It would have been nice to have more time to see more of the area.Guest review bystevenUnited States - 10.0

The Monterey Bay aquarium was top notch, not only with animals, but facilities and numerous volunteers. The area is beautiful and weather was fabulous. We had the absolute best clam chowder, so fresh. Plus we could watch the otters, seals and dolphins in the kelp beds from the window as we ate.Guest review byTerriUnited States - 10.0
We enjoyed Santa Barbara as usual.
We enjoyed Santa Barbara as usual. We have been coming there once a year for about 10 years. We enjoyed the Trolley Tour, although we have had better guides. The one we had seemed to roll through all the sights where, during previous visits, we were able to get better photos, and saw more.Guest review byAnonymous - 8.0

I like staying in South Tahoe for a lot of the hiking and places to visit and eat...however, I would probably never go during this holiday weekend ever again; it was too busy too crowded and too noisy but usually it's a really fun place to go to . Lots of historical places to visit.Guest review bykmt travel chicUnited States - 6.0

I liked the area of the property as its right next to the on and off ramp for the Hwy. Its right next to the Denny's, well as a Walmart super center! Theres also Wendys, and Starbucks across the street! Its far enough from the inner city were there tends to be a lot of riff raff as well low scale crime, as well as drugs. I felt at peace, and you can tell that the management puts a lot towards 2training her staff! Real good hard-working staff as well as very courteous and attentive to the guests needs! I figured that there would be a lot of noise and everything else that's associated with hotels that are more cost effective.Guest review byRufusUnited States - 10.0

I wish I would have planned to stay longer, The downtown and riverfront area looked fantastic. I was able to spend a morning paddling at Fulsom Lake, which was a short drive from the hotel, and it was just spectacular. Highly recommend, and I am planning a visit back for sure.Guest review byMichaelUnited States - 10.0

Unfortunately most museums and the botanical gardens were closed when we were there, we arrived Monday and left Thursday, it seems to be a city that mostly works Thursday to Sunday. The hotel was walking distance from the city center, easy to walk around, beautiful city, we didn't have enough time to do the hikes in the canyons, I would love to go back for that.Guest review byMartaSwitzerland
