On our bucket list. Beautiful beautiful.
On our bucket list. Beautiful beautiful. Wife and I rented a car and even drove 8 hrs round trip one day to Denali on a whim. 3 grizzlies just came up and started walking on the road 1 car ahead of us. That long trip was worth it. I would plan places to go though. We did the train from Anchorage to Seward and then back which takes an entire day. That was a little long. Just one way would have been fine but since we were staying in Anchorage..... We did see the Turnagain Arm numerous times just because we were driving south to different places but the view never got old. It was gloomy and off and on rainy half the time but that was expected because of the time we were there - Aug 30 - Sep 6. We did get out a lot because of having a rental car. If doing a cruise then I guess you will have to rely on the excursions only. We did get to see lots of things and were in no rush. We drove thru the tunnel to Whittier. Seen the Salmon swimming upstream near the Portage Glacier. Went to Alyeska Resort as part of an excursion and had lunch at a gut truck parked just outside of Girdwood Brewing. Also the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center was awesome.Guest review byBruceUnited States - 10.0

We (myself and extended family) were attending my grandson's wedding at Alyeska and rented 4 VRBO's in Girdwood. Overall, everyone was satisfied with their lodgings and enjoyed the beauty of Girdwood and Alyeska. It's definitely worth the visit! Although it is a small town, there are enough cafe's and stores to satisfy without losing the frontier feeling of Alaska. Lots of good hiking and places to eat.Guest review byAnonymous - 4.0
This cabin has a great location on beautiful turn again arm,...
This cabin has a great location on beautiful turn again arm, and is just 20 minutes from anchorage. However, the interior is very disappointing. It's billed as rustic, but it's actually just run down and not maintained. Furniture is busted & dreary looking, large stains on the carpet, and the heater didn't work. When we told the single staff person, who was also the waitress and cook in the bar, she just shrugged and said to look for the controls at the top in the loft. At least the shower was clean with lots of hot water and there was a coffee maker for the morning. But cooking pots and pans were in terrible shape and you wouldn't want to eat out of them.. we only stayed one night, which was enough. Too bad as the cabin could have been so cozy and nice, if owner would just invest a little money in up keep, and decent furnishings.Guest review bychantalUnited States - 8.0
The city is convenient but I did not find it attractive.
The city is convenient but I did not find it attractive. There are some good tours from Anchorage although I did not participate. We arrived from Seward with Salmon Berry Tours which was enjoyable. The Tour Guide Driver was very pleasant and did her best to make sure we had an enjoyable journey.Guest review byFarrugiaUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Beautiful area and great hikes.
Beautiful area and great hikes. The folks at the grocery store are very friendly, the local brewery is great and the food trucks supplied awesome dinner. We have travel with our 1 y old and liked it all. We managed to hike Mt Alyeska, visit Portage Glacier, hike Exit glacier from Seward and took a day cruise from Whittier.Guest review byIrinaUnited States - 10.0

Rugged mountain trails, great birding, excellent geology, very tasty food. Simple lodgings but I don't particularly like fancy stuff or fancy places. Fragile snowflakes need not bother. If you can take care of yourself and your needs are simple, kind of a step up from camping, this place works. Staff are super friendly. Wifi is a little slow but you're surrounded by mountains, so who cares?Guest review byPaulaUnited States - 8.0

I enjoyed Anchorage and enjoyed the Federal building which was free entry and had a lot of interesting information about Alaska and all its wildlife etc and has a theatre which presents short videos about different things about Alaska life. I enjoyed strolling around the town. For me coming from a busy city I think Anchorage was a tad boring because I come from a busy place and Anchorage was not enough for me to amuse myself in the 4 days we are here (maybe a bit too long). Also hardly anyone on the streets in downtown Anchorage mainly tourists.Guest review byLucyAustralia - 10.0
GIrdwood is a sweet location.
GIrdwood is a sweet location. Not far from Anchorage and a great place from which to have a day trip to Seward and the Kenai Fjords. I recommend those flying in to Anchorage to spend a few days here before heading to Anchorage. A great way to start a vacation in beautiful Alaska!Guest review byTeriUnited States
