We had a lovely stay at African Bungalows in Nungwi! The staff were friendly and attentive without being intrusive, and it was great to see the owner around, always making sure everything was just right. The breakfast was excellent—fresh, delicious, and with something new to enjoy every day. The serene atmosphere made it feel like an oasis in the middle of Nungwi, perfect for relaxing and unwinding. Resort is tightly joined with the nature. Excellent meal I cannot describe what experience we had. Not only location and kitchen are extraordinary fantastic, Pradeep and his team fulfilled any of our wishes, they fulfilled wishes even not expressed yet, even not wished yet ! We travelled throughout the world with my wife but NOWHERE we found as friendly, welcoming, helpful and positive staff as Pradeep's is !!!

This year we spent our Christmas vacation at the Riu Palace Zanzibar Hotel. It was already our second Christmas holiday in this hotel. I would like to thank you for the wonderful days spent in this hotel. Where to start? From the beach (beautiful clean beach, great service of beach boys and security), bar and restaurant staff very nice, attentive. Yohana always greeted us in the main restaurant with a nice smile (we thank him for always a nice welcome). Food quality very good. A mix of Indian, Italian and international cuisine. In my opinion, the rooms are beautiful, stylish, always beautifully cleaned and smelling :-) Every day before going to bed, they prepare your room again. At sunset, have a drink at the Ginger bar by the pool and take photos. Unforgettable! Special thanks to the Assistant General Manager Mr. Ghosh. An excellent person not only as a personality, but also from a professional point of view. Always available and willing to help. Thank you

We had an amazing stay at Kendwa Rocks Hotel and loved everything about it! Positives: 1. The location and beach are breathtaking, and the option to enjoy services at the beach beds is a great touch. 2. The staff were incredibly friendly, helpful, and always greeted us with a smile. 3. There are plenty of activities to choose from, making the stay fun and engaging. 4. We stayed in two suites, both of which were fantastic—well-equipped and very comfortable. 5. The entire property felt safe, which added to our peace of mind. 6. Even the shisha team was friendly and added to the relaxed vibe.

We spent our honeymoon I this hotel and everything was outstanding. Clean rooms and facilities, very friendly staff who are adaptive and flexible to meet all your needs. Food was great, option to eat at the beach. The place offered various activities during the day/evening so you can't get bored. Tried the SPA (couple program) which was good value for money. This is by far the best resort in Zanzibar, everything was beyond our expectations. The beach and the views are absolutely incredible, very rich breakfast, extremely delicious food, very clean and luxurious villa and everything is TOP!!! I paid cash on arrival for 11 nights.The hut was very hot and I wanted to leave the next day, but he would not refund me. I contacted booking.com 2 times, but never heard from them, so I was stuck there. The owner is a preacher and has a congregation just behind the huts, so there is a lot of noice many mornings and evenings and in between someone is practising the piano and he is not good.

Kendwa beach was definitely the best beach compared to...

Kendwa beach was definitely the best beach compared to Nungwi, especially the south part. Even in low tide it was easy to take a swim. Also the beach here is wider and feel less crowded. As on the complete stretch there were many people trying to sell you stuff but on the south part not so many ”permanent” sales people other than the ones having sheds. The Maasai roaming around are friendly but just say no with a smile and most will not be persistent in their effort to sell you something..

Matemwe is a perfect destination for anyone who wants peace and quiet, but still has access to great activities. You can easily arrange dolphin watching and swimming tours – look for Captain Lucho, he helped us with everything and made the experience amazing. A beautiful and relaxing place to stay!

Generally, a lovely and intimate establishment with staff that care for your personal needs. The manager is so friendly and always wants to know how the guests are doing. The most beautiful sunrises. The performances add to the spice. I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

Beautiful beach with a decent selection of restaurants and bars. I loved the Fish Market restaurant and kept going back. Amazing blue sea, powder soft sand and great location for sunset. As a female solo traveller I didn’t like constant hassle from men dressed as Masai.

If you are looking for white sand beach with the best ocean...

If you are looking for white sand beach with the best ocean waters and minimal tides, Kendwa is the best place in Zanzibar. The beach is the most spacious and greatest on the island and the village provides all the necessities you would need. With many tours and water activities offered on the beach you would hardly need to move anywhere else. It is also a walkable distance to Nungwi during low tide if anyone is interested in a more bustily environment.

Matemwe was nice - the beach part.

Matemwe was nice - the beach part. Sad to see the poverty behind the gates of the hotel. The tides were a bit different from what we have expected as the water would leave the beach at 9am and return around 5pm. If you did not make it to swim early in the morning, you missed it. We took a reef walk which was beautiful, saw a lot of see creatures, and that was very amazing experience. Also took a boat tour to see the sunset - it was worth the trip. Did not like how the locals would just stop on the beach and start shouting at you to buy smth. Also the part of the hotel beach is not segregated in any way, which does not give you a privacy enough. The food was amazing though - the hotel goes much beyond - and all day brekfast concept was amazing.

The nearby beaches are scenic, but there are some important things to consider. The ocean is full of sea urchins, making swimming risky without proper footwear. During the day, low tide pulls the water far from the shore, so swimming may not always be possible. If you walk toward the reef, expect to be approached frequently by local beach vendors, which can feel intrusive — especially when you're clearly not carrying money. Local security presence is minimal, so don't expect much intervention in these situations. It's best to come prepared and manage your expectations if you're looking for a peaceful swim.

There are a lot of hidden costs when coming to Nungwi. If you book any excursions, be prepared to pay double what you book for as they add on conservancy and entry fees on top. The beaches are not the crystal clear blue that you think. The beaches are highly affected by the tides. When it is low tide the beach is covered with seaweed and the water is too far out for you to swim. You only get to swim for a few hours a day when it is in high tide. If I were booking to come back to Zanzibar, go to Paje!!

The sea and beach with super soft and white sand are...

The sea and beach with super soft and white sand are absolutely fabulous and relatively clean. I got bitten by sand fleas on my legs because I spend a lot of time in the sea and walked barefoot. There is a lot of informal trade on the beach by locals trying to sell something. Maybe even more so if you are a woman walking alone.
