FAQs about hotels in Algarve

Sun and Fun in the Algarve

A paradise of yellow sandstone cliffs and turquoise waters that's full of green golf courses and seasoned with delicious food and rich history, the Algarve region in Portugal has lively spots, quiet corners, and inland areas that well deserve a visit. From the banks of the Ria Formosa lagoon in the east, to the high cliffs of Sagres on the southwest tip of Europe, the region is a great option for a sunny holiday and Booking.com will help you find the best hotels in the Algarve.

The name of this Portuguese region comes from the Arabic Al-Gharb, meaning ‘The West’, but before being part of the Moorish empire, it was inhabited by ancient tribes, and successively by Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, and Visigoths.

When it officially became part of Portugal, it gained fame as a centre for trade. The beautiful city of Lagos still offers a picturesque and colourful historic centre that recalls its important position in the area.

Flying into Faro Airport puts the whole region at your fingertips. The best all-inclusive hotels in the Algarve include their own golf course, an activity very popular in this region. If you just want sea and sun, then keep an eye on our deals for the best beach hotels in the Algarve.

Albufeira is a beautiful place with lots to do from walking, beach hopping, shopping, water sports and other activities like horse riding and jeep safari. The weather was fantastic for mid September and I found it fairly reasonably priced for meals out. If you are looking for a beach holiday with options of lots to do this is it!

Faro has a lot to offer.

Faro has a lot to offer. The Ria Formosa nature reserve is extremely close by (highlights are dolphin and bird watching, lovely islands and beaches). In Faro we could enjoy the Festa de Ria Formosa (a seafood festival), restaurants with very good and fresh food, an interesting photo exhibition, a very good food and drink tour (we visited most of the restaurants again in the following days) and a Portuguese guitar performance (don't miss it!). You can also go to Faro beach (by bus or ferry) and have a leisurely time there (there are also good seafront restaurants close to the bus station) or go to Ludo trail and watch flamingoes (get there by bus and walk). It's also recommended to visit the adjacent towns (via train or bus), e.g. we went to the Saturday market in Loule and enjoyed it a lot. We would have liked to stay a couple of days longer (not _very_ much longer because the weather forecast announced quite scorching temperatures the following week). Another option in the future would be to hire a car and explore even more of the vicinity.

A lovely town about an hours drive from Porto airport: a good base to explore further into the algarve (and the west coast). But it’s also a charming place that manages to expertly balance a sense of its history with the need to cater to tourists. I loved it!

Tavira is quite a small town, we stayed for 4 nights so it gave us 3 and a half days. At the time we went, there was a festival on which had 7 stages around the town with music and lots of craft stalls which was a bonus and gave us quite a bit more to do. If you just like to relax and soak up the sun then you need to get the boat to Tavira Island (2.60 € return), evenings I guess when the festival isn't on will be rather quiet.

Alvor is a fairly small resort, made up of a series of small fairly narrow walkways that are lined with the various restaurants, bars, and small shops. Most of the streets / walkways lead down to the seafront where you find the main three or four fish restaurants, that cook up the catch if the day, for the hundreds of locals, and tourists that decend into the area each evening. Alvor is very family friendly, there are no hen or Stagg parties, and no groups of people singing their favourite football chant from the outside of bars. There are families walking round of an evening, deciding where to eat enjoying their break away, removed from the normal treadmill of life. So great relaxing location, lots of places to eat and drink, in a small fairly compact location,.

Carvoeiro is a great place to use as a base camp, especially for families looking to see the area. The boardwalk is awesome and we explored the caves and jumped from one of the cliffs. We went on the sunrise kayak tour from Carvahlo beach to see Benagil cave, which was amazing and ended up spending the whole day at Carvahlo Beach. Silvas is close by and worth a day trip as well.

A beautiful town with everything you need on a family holiday all within an easy walk of most accommodation. Not too busy which was an added bonus and the locals are all very friendly. A stunning beach and plenty of local attractions that will immerse you in the history of the area and Portugal. One of the nicer areas I've visited in the Algarve.

One of the nicer areas I've visited in the Algarve. A few tourists about about not nearly as busy as Tavira, and as Olhao is a working fishing port, it still has that "local" feel to it. Decent esplanade adjacent to the harbour area although the only poor "rip-off" meal we had during our stay was along the front so my advice would be to go slightly inland where the quality of the food and value for money is a lot better. Nice and sunny during our stay but a bit windy so worth taking a jumper or fleece for the evenings. Best meals were at Piteu ds Baixa Mar, Taberna D'Olhao, Cafe Snack Domino and O Trevo. Worst was Churrasco Grill for reasons mentioned above.
