Literally this is an oasis of tranquility after visiting the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers.
A beautiful, garden setting on the north side of Franz Josef.
We sat out on the decking overlooking the pond late afternoon listening to birdsong.
The rooms were amazing, spacious, well planned with a huge bed and large bathroom.
We paid for continental breakfast and were very happy the selection.

Kate was super helpful and was available to offer us suggestions for the area and about the property. She also ran very reasonably priced group yoga classes that my family loved attending. The villa we rented was spacious, spotlessly clean, well equipped with kitchen equipment and lovely linen, and although it doesn’t have a television, we played a number of new, different games as a family of 5 adults. The hostel is very close to the bus stop, restaurants, and convenience stores, making everything very convenient. The room is clean, and the bed is soft and comfortable. If you need to do laundry, you can pay 6 dollars to use the washing machine and dryer in the laundry room. The receptionist at the hostel is a young Chinese man who is very enthusiastic, and he is happy to answer any questions we have.

The room was quiet, a little tight with a double bed and a single bed in each room, but reasonable, the free washing machine & dryer in the room was a real bonus, everything worked as it should, including lovely hot water in the shower and we loved the space, with 2 separate bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen with complimentary teas and coffee. Top marks.

The glacier is not reachable anymore.
The glacier is not reachable anymore. The area is roped off from a great distance away. A few years ago we walked right up to bottom of the glacier.
The only way to see the glacier now is by helicopter at a great cost.

I loved how time stood still. very relaxing, a beautiful natural environment with clean crisp air. Friendly locals. Betty Janes was a great place for dinner definitely try the Deep sea orange roughy. Friendly obliging staff.

Interesting little town (village), with a pub having the hard antler bar. Our midday meal there was good. We did not explore the town.
The Heartland Hotel, where we stayed overnight, is bit out of town, and is a self-contained pub/motel.

The suspension bridge over the Hokitika gorge hike was most impressive. While we didn’t make it all the way down to the 2nd bridge (which was apparently closed for repairs) we were happy with the opportunity to still across the first bridge and get some great pics.
The Tree Top walk was rather —meh— not sure it was worth the cost of admission; my sister was seriously freaked out by the heights of the walkway so she didn’t enjoy it too much. However, the cafe there is quite good!

Beautiful scenic retreat, with waterfall and true NZ country vibe. Unfortunately, I saw the host yelling at a guest who arrived at night, for asking where the kitchen was located. I felt surprised, because the host was polite to me. I would still recommend that you stay here, but maybe just read the provided map if you're arriving at night!

Ross is a lovely small town.
Ross is a lovely small town. Its quiet and relaxed and the Top Ten Holiday park is even more quiet and relaxed. We enjoyed a fire on the beach and relaxing walks in the surrounding area. The museum was very interesting and its close to a lot of other really neat places on the west coast.

The glacier area is a wonderful place to visit. The weather can be unpredictable so we recommend booking your activities for first thing in the morning, the weather tends to get worse throughout the day.
