Boat was large enough for all the passengers. There was a great viewing area on the top deck at the back of the boat which also had a large hot tub to use after dinner. Next level down had comfortable tables and lounges for food and drinks. On the water level there were two 2 big picnic style tables at the back to sit and watch the scenery unfold. Below deck were the cabins and also access to the front of the boat. Cabins were comfortable, big windows to look at the scenery and had private shower and toilet. The meals served for dinner and breakfast were delicious and plentiful. There was a wide selection of wines available at the bar and were payable on tab at end of stay. The kayaking was an awesome extra and we also jumped in the water which was icy but refreshing. The crew were very friendly, helpful and attentive. We really enjoyed meeting some lovely people.

One of the best rooms in NZ, we had lots of space, it is very close to the center, 10 min walk, the view from the living room was amazing. It is worth it to take a room with a view to the lake.

Everything we needed and more with the accommodation we chose. Grocery stores, laundromat if needed. Fuel stations, many restaurant choices. Beautiful lake. Great starting point for @luxe tours to Milford Sound as well as Doubtful sound, Glow Worm Caves. Easy to get around.

Tranquil town away from the touristy hubbub of Te Anau but within range to catch the tour to Milford Sound. The Church restaurant served excellent meals at a reasonable price. Probably best suited to tours to Doubtful Sounds, but we did not mind the 20 minute drive to Te Anau.

Stunning area, Lake is gorgeous, walks along the lake, heaps of accommodation to choose from. Milford Sound, is only 2 hours away. So Te Anau is a great stopping point for accommodation. Manapouri is a short drive away as well. Plus Te Anau is close to some popular Tramps, Kepler, Milford and Routeburn.

Manapouri is a breathtakingly beautiful area with a quiet restful atmosphere. There is a lovely restaurant nearby and other food outlets. Lots to do in the area too. There are the day and overnight trips to Doubtful Sound, a stunningly beautiful area that will blow your mind. You do need to book ahead for these trips. There is also glow worm caves, alpaca farms, Kaykaking, tramping and more. Do your research and enjoy an amazing time in Manapouri.

We drove our hire car from Queenstown and stayed just the one night as we had a Tour booked the next day on the boat. We enjoyed the drive and the stunning scenery on our trip to Milford Sound; however, if you are short on time, you can FLY straight out and do the Boat cruise in half a day. If you drive down- it's an ALL-DAY event and that is why we opted to stay overnight and travel back to Queenstown the next day. There is only a CAFE in the town for quick food and coffee etc... There were limited places to pull up on the trip to have a meal. Lots of scenery and a long drive but enjoyable if you like car trips?

Milford is a must if you have come this far, do the cruise, plan for a 3 hour drive each way, so you can stop at Mirror lakes and all the viewpoints, its best when it's raining, but it's truly beautiful with a light bit of snow.

Manapouri is a very small, lakefront town that has a beautiful view of Lake Manapouri and the mountains beyond. It also has a fantastic cafe/bar/restaurant called The Church, which I thoroughly recommend. However, don't stay at the Manapouri Lakeview Motor Inn if you can avoid it.

Staying in the Sound is special - it is a very short drive (minutes) to the cruise departure points. It's about 2 hours drive otherwise from the closest town to the national park. You are immersed in the environment and you need to be flexible in regards to weather - we had several road closures (can't leave the park), rain and significant snow fall at the Homer tunnel area. The Lodge did a good job of communicating the various conditions.
