The staff and services are exceptional! Gu san and Sugawara san went the extra mile to help us send our snowboards from hotel to airport and made sure that everything was in perfect order. The team is always responsive online to answer any enquiries so that our stay could be seamless! The room is very spacious and functional with an extended ski locker room attached to the hotel. We love it here :)

We pre-booked breakfast, which was mostly Japanese style buffet, although a small selection of croissant and cereal available. Pre-booked dinner was Fabulous! Hotpot & DIY BBQ style meat with soups and veggies each night. Different variations for each of the 3 nights we were there. Definitely recommend pre-booking meals as nowhere close/easy to go. Staff - AMAZING. Even with small amount of English - very easy to communicate. Ski/clothing/gloves/helmet hire very easy to access in hotel but quite dated, although fine for 2-3 days of skiing. We had to buy lift tickets across the road at lift ticketing office, which was simple. Onsen absolutely fabulous. Beautiful shampoos/conditioner etc provided. Robes available in hallway shelves, along with help yourself green tea at any time. Bus stop 1 minute walk away. Great family hotel.

I can highly recommend this hotel! I stayed here for 2 nights and it felt like I was at home. The owner of the hotel is the kindest and most welcoming person I’ve met during my travel so far. He gave me so many helpful recommendations for Yamanouchi and Nagano and told me many interesting things about Japanese culture. Despite this hotel is usually known for its great winter sport location I had a wonderful time here in October (without snow). The hotel is surrounded by natur and a scenic view of the mountains and offers a large lobby area and 2 Onsen with a wonderful view and calming atmosphere. There are 3 different gondola stations near the hotel that promise a good view and let you experience to “fly” over the mountains. The city centre of Yamanouchi and the snow monkey park can be reached by bus and are perfect for a day trip. I’m very grateful for my stay here and would always choose this hotel again in the future (with and without snow). 本当にありがとう！愛をこめて。

I would easily give this ryokan 12/10 if booking would let me. Such an amazing experience form every perspective and definitely surpassed all of our expectations. Beautiful spacious comfy rooms equipped with everything you might need. Extremely comfortable futon beds, sleeping on these made me really want to have these at home. Both indoor and outdoor onsens were great and were never crowded, you could always take your time and enjoy hot bath. We really enjoyed wearing yukatas in the ryokan which also added to the atmosphere of the place. Food was perfect as well! We really enjoyed the traditional Japanese breakfast and the dinner that we ordered was just phenomenal and probably one of the best ones we ever had. Can't even say how many dishes it included as there were just too many but everything was delicious and regardless of the food preferences you would find something you'll enjoy. And finally the staff of the ryokan - extremely welcoming, helpful and willing to teach you something new about Japanese culture. They took us to the Jigokudani monkey park by car and were even offering to drive us to the train station when we were leaving even though it's like 5 minutes away by feet. Just to sum this up, If you're considering going to Yudanaka - this is THE place to stay.

The service was incredible, from the time we booked to the last goodbye. It was our first time in Japan and for most of us, our first time skiing. Naoko helped us with absolutely everything, booking extra space for our friends, booking the right tickets for ski lifts, guiding us where to go, looking for ski school, renting gear and equipment, taking buses, you name it! Always so kind and calm! Everyone in the hotel was extremely friendly and helpful. The place is really clean and like a home! You can pretty much ski from the hotel car park! Food was beautiful and it was just so nice to relax in the Onsen after a day of ski and before a feast! Not worrying about restaurants, with 4 teenagers, all we did at night was enjoy their company playing ping pong, cards and chatting about the day! We couldn’t feel more comfortable or welcome!

Excellent hotel with onsen. The open air onsen is the best one. Nice welcoming hosts. Quite neighborhood. Super close to train station and bus station, and convenience store. When checking out, I noticed that there a lot of souvenirs from guests from different countries, so bring one from your country when visiting :) If you want to visit snow monkey park, best time is in winter, otherwise the chances of seeing the monkey are low (we saw only one in late October)

Hands down the greatest place we've ever stayed at in Japan. The staff were extremely friendly, paying attention to personal touches, and making you feel valued and welcome at all times. The lounge is absolutely the highlight, here the Grand Phenix shares three things with you: great local draft beer, a gentle Okushiga snowing view, and a warm firepit. This lounge is so special that you can wait for your dinner table (because of the tight reservation in Christmas season) there while drinking your drinks by a bonfire, this even makes waiting a wonderful experience...

10 out of 10 in everything. The staff were going above and beyond to help you. They took our suitcases near the train station so we don't miss our train. The dinner was one of the best meals we've had in our lives. The baths are actually all natural hot springs. The facilities were exceptionally clean. The view was stunning.

The monkeys are marvellous.

The monkeys are marvellous. Of course they are attracted to the valley by the food they receive regularly but they are totally free to come and go. So entertaining and endearing to observe how they interact. The park was created in 1964. Beautiful forest in a mountainous area that grows apples, peaches and grapes and lots of vegetables. Pay attention to the hotel you choose. Avoid Hotel Housei.

I think I would have stayed a little longer (than 3 nights)...

I think I would have stayed a little longer (than 3 nights) to take advantage of the skiing and the onsen's (alternate between the two!), to relax for longer in the Japanese countryside. (I did not come to Japan to just check off the tourist sites...) The town has narrow streets to walk on, even without gps you cannot get lost as it is more or less parallel to the river, especially the more tourist section with all the onsens.

For a tourist location, it was hard to find restaurants open, or willing to seat us (a party of five). But in general the food was good and the location was great for hot springs and access to the snow monkey park.

The Onsen hot springs experience was unique and for anyone wanting to see how the Japanese hold this aspect of their beliefs in such high regard this area is a perfect example and for a couple of days you can immerse yourself in a different cultural and culinary experience that will be the highlight of your holiday and the truest insight of this unique way of life.
