This hotel is a little gem. Very clean, light modern rooms, well designed with an extremely functional bathroom and comfortable bed. Lovely soft linen and towels. Cute little balcony with view. Air Con worked really well. Family run, such nice people & couldn't do enough for us. Excellent breakfast, replenished regularly. Used the ferries, the bus and the trains over 4 days. 2 x stations in town. Hotel is less than 100m to lake & ferry, large supermarket around the corner, laundry in the next street. The town is a little stunner and we so enjoyed our visit. Hope we can one day visit again. Thank you Hotel del Conte.

Brand-new Hotel (they opened on August the 4th). Extremely clean and modern facility, spectacular bedrooms with all anyone may need, wonderful finishes and very well furnished with an absolute taste of design. On top of everything, the staff was very kind and helpful, having our satisfaction as their number one priority. Also. We ate at their restaurant Le Bolle, in the bubbles. And it’s been a unique experience. We will definitely come back.

We had a lovely stay and the staff was extremely nice. There are two breakfast options, we chose the breakfast which you can enjoy in your room, and we absolutely loved it every day. We asked for a few adjustments since we were travelling with our baby, and the staff made everything possible. The location was perfect - it was a short walk into the centre, you were right at the pier (we also had a lake view), and there was enough parking in front as well. We can absolutely recommend this hotel and will definitely come back!

FAQs about hotels in Lago Maggiore - Italy

A Breath of Fresh Air

Italy’s longest lake, Lake Maggiore lies at the foot of the southern Alps and extends into Switzerland in the north. Most of the Lake Maggiore hotels in Switzerland are in Locarno and neighbouring Ascona. Surrounded by vineyards, Locarno houses a 12th-century castle and an innovative representation of the solar system which extends as far as Tegna village.

Also in Swiss territory is Brissago, starting point for boat trips to the Brissago Islands whose botanical gardens grow coffee plants. Over the Italian border is beautiful Cannobio in Piedmont, where brightly coloured buildings overlook the small harbour.

South is Ghiffa, home to a UNESCO World Heritage-listed pilgrimage mountain. Just beyond is Verbania, a laidback city lining 2 of Maggiore Lake’s shores. Across the water, the largest of the Borromean Islands – Isola Bella – has a palace and stepped gardens offering wonderful lake views. Home to the largest concentration of Lake Maggiore hotels, Stresa is a lovely town and departure point for boat trips to these islands.

Near the lake’s southern tip is Arona, while less well-known Lake Maggiore resorts in Lombardy include Angera (known for wines and a medieval castle), sleepy Ranco, and Luino with its popular weekly market.

Booking.com has a fabulous range of apartments, B&Bs and hotels by Lake Maggiore covering all these resorts and more.

Stresa was such a beautiful place to visit.

Stresa was such a beautiful place to visit. Don't miss the Terre Borromeo or the Prosecco at Enoteca Da Giannino! We spent 4 nights there (girls trip) - perfect time to slow down after 9 days of travel/site-seeing. One day for the islands, one day for a visit to another town on the lake and one day for wandering in Stresa. Excellent dinners at La Rosa dei Venti and Osteria Mercato. Cocktail prosecco at Enoteca Da Giannino wine bar. Easy access by train, however - not so easy to locate a taxi from the train to your lodging. (Uber is super expensive, but there is a taxi service you can reserve for your ride back to the train station.) Skip Como - come to Stresa!

Verbania is a really good base for a stay on Lake Maggiore.

Verbania is a really good base for a stay on Lake Maggiore. It has 2 parts - Intra where the main ports are, and Pallanza. There are lots of boats leaving and arriving every day at Intra, both passenger-only and ferries with cars, so very useful for exploring other parts of the lake. Intra has a nice sea front and an old town with little courtyards and cafes dotted all over it. The highlight of Pallanza is Villa Taranto, the botanic gardens. Well worth a visit.

Baveno is a town of human scale.

Baveno is a town of human scale. It's position on the lake in the Borromean gulf means the it is very well connected with ferries. At the time I visited (September) Ferries run around the sights of the lake centre every half hour, and twice a week they run up to Locarno and Ascona in Switzerland (well worth a look. The lake navigation company don't advertise it but they do a week holiday pass which is good for unlimited journeys over the entire length of the lake for 95 Euro per week. If you are going to be getting around by ferry predominantly, this is outstanding value. For comparison, on Lake lucerne and Lake Geneva, the ferry company charge 90 Euros per day for an open pass. Baveno doesn't overplay the tourist card in terms or pricing. An espresso can be had for 1.30 Euro, a Cappucino for 2.50 Euro. The town is well served by Uber (who are more reliable than the local taxi firms I dealt with, and considerably lower cost). Don't miss the Borromeo islands (and Villas) or the botanical garden at Villa Taranto. If you have a head for heights try the bucket lift (Funivia) at Laveno for some great views over the lake. Look out also for Sunday Lunchtime music (chamber music or soft jazz generally) in towns around the lake and modern art exhibitions at Villa Giulia in Pallanza. An exhibition of work by Ugo Nespolo was incredibly good, and the ticket also gives access to Museo Paesaggio with some interesting bronzes and landscapes On the northern shores of the lake, Cannobio is a lovely little town, well worth a visit. and Cannero is a (better?) alternative to Luino on Market days. On the Swiss lakeshore, personally I prefer Ascona to Locarno, principally because of size and a more Italian vibe but both are worth visiting.

I have been going to Cannobio for nearly thirty years it is a little gem on Lago Maggiore and is the essence if an Italian town. There are not many English or UK tourists, which makes it good to practise Italian. It sits on the lake with an amazing Sunday market and emits a feeling of comfort and home for me I should say its horrible to keep it a little secret but it is a great place to visit with amazing restaurants and good quality food with prices for all budgets and campsites too

Cannero Riviera is a quiet spot on the shores of Lake Maggiore in a perfect position for sightseeing trips around the lake , including into Switzerland, both by car and by boat. It is served by a very picturesque foot passenger ferry terminal. For such a small place there are plenty of eating options including restaurants, pizza places and gelateria but limited options for shopping. However that need not be a problem as there are great weekly markets at Connobio and Luino both of which can be reached from Cannero by ferry. Can thoroughly recommend a trip to Ascona in Switzerland and the Borromean islands just off Stresa as places to visit

A small place by the lake, but the shore is more or less private, so you are limited to the part of the shore that is in the camp, The place has many shops, which are more or less empty or already run down, also there is only one restaurant , which is open all day, but there is a lot of traffic. Also, there is a lot of garbage on the street. In general, you get the feeling that they had big plans for tourism, but they did not succeed.

Easy to underestimate Isola Bella when you get off the ferry...

Easy to underestimate Isola Bella when you get off the ferry and are assaulted by retail stands. But get past this as quickly as possible to visit the villa and especially the gardens. The restaurant Centrale (Food Family Love) in Stresa is quite nice. We ate there twice. The pumpkin soup is delicious. Do not go to the Cafe Bolongaro across from the navigation offices. High pressure to buy and the pastries were dry and flavorless, as were the beverages. Should have left immediately when they started putting things on plates when we walked in.

The town Baveno is beautiful without any doubt!

The town Baveno is beautiful without any doubt! It has nice parks, architecture and magnificent views of Lake Maggiore and the Alps. Unlike Stresa, the town is not crowded with tourists. From Baveno there is a very fast and very convenient transport to the Borromean Islands, and the port has much fewer travelers than those in Stresa. From Baveno there is transport to other beautiful towns on Lake Maggiore, such as Stresa, Verbania, Locarno, Cannobio and Laveno. If you don't speak Italian and aren't traveling by car, you should definitely visit the Tourist Information Center in Baveno, where you may get help about your trip to other towns on Lake Maggiore. Without help from the people in Information Center, you could experience very serious difficulties and waste a lot of time due to following: 1. If you do not speak Italian you may encounter serious difficulties communicating with the locals. 2. Public transport by train or bus can be very problematic. 3. A delay of 40 minutes is common for buses. Sometimes bus drivers pass some of the stops without stopping! 4. Trains can be very late or not arrive at all due to strikes, repairs or sudden changes in the schedule. 5. Baveno lacks a bus station and you can't buy bus tickets anywhere else but from the bus driver, and the drivers don't speak English and charge you extra because you buy tickets in the bus, which is a catch-22! Some streets in the town lack sidewalks, which is a problem if you're not traveling by car.
