Where do I start??? The hosts obviously… the most amazing couple, super friendly, lovely, professional and people that put love into what they do. The space is the most amazing room we ever had. The connection with nature, the details, THE VIEW! You won’t find anything like the peace you find in this place! We should have kept it for a honeymoon! …forgot the food and the drinks and the staff, everything is perfect.

Beautiful space with lovely terrace in the serene village Jaibalito. As it doesn’t have a big number of rooms and the village is rather small, I would connect easily with all other guests. The owners Judith and Tao are super helpful with everything, even beyond regular “hostel host duties”. Has a basic community kitchen for everyone to use.

Great sized room. Good pool and access to the lake. Loved the Temezcal / sauna. Gardens were pretty. Staff super helpful and friendly. Didn't eat at restaurant as we preferred to eat out in town, but they were happy to bring us drinks by the pool. Liked staying in Santiago - the whole freak street traveller vibe in San Pedro wasn't for us. We liked being in a proper Mayan town, near market, restaurants, bars, but lovely to come back to island of peace at Tiosh Abaj. Read some of the less complimentary reviews - sure there is a slight air of fading grandeur about the place but for the price it was great.

Gorgeous, quiet hotel on the lake. Lots of little hang out spots and a great terrace. They alsomhave a big, fully equipped kitchen. This hotel is hidden away down a little lane but has coffee shops, a bakery and great restaurants right on its doorstep. There is also. A restaurant on the roof. The staff were so friendly and helpful. I had great chats with them. Nothing was a problem.. this is not a party hotel somis nice and quiet. They have kayaks to rent.

PERFECT location, right by the lake with incredible views on the 3 volcanos. Even though the bungalow was ready, they didn't want to let us in before 3PM! So we had to wait 5 hours. Finally at 1PM, they accepted to let us in the room that was ready all this time. But it was worth the wait. The room is clean, big and beautiful. There is a restaurant but we didn't try it.

It's a great village to walk around.

It's a great village to walk around. It's not just a party town. There are quiet spots. For instance, if you walk up to the main road from the Boat ramp from Panajachel, turn left instead of right, go down to the end and then right, up through the maze of restaurants, places to stay, etc. Very quiet, very nice, very tropical, and different than the heart of the village, which would be if tuned right at the main street - up the hill from the boat ramp, which is only a 2 to 3 minute walk.

The town is up a steep hill so be prepared for some exercise or take a tuk tuk! Gorgeous views! Take a cooking class there like we did! Laid back town, not a lot to do or many restaurants, but a more authentic town that supports its Mayan locals with local wares and cuisines.

The market is fabulous for fibery things.

The market is fabulous for fibery things. Backstrap looms, cotton weaving yarn, and finished yardage and garments. NOT touristy, hard to find coffee before ten a.m., and very little English-speaking. It's a noisy and bustling center for locals (rural Mayans). The shops and the market are a bonanza if you are a fiber tourist. If you're looking for an idyllic green and quiet oasis on the lake, you need to look to the outskirts of town, or hop on a ferry to one the many smaller, more tourist oriented communities

We enjoyed San Pedro. it was picturesque with the beautiful lake and mountains. It was walkable, also easy to get a TukTuk. If you walk up the hill into the village, you get past the tourist streets and see local life. There are plenty of restaurants and shops. Many of the restaurants had seating that looked out over the lake. The souvenir market sellers are not pushy. We went to a Mayan museum, Tzunun' Ya'. It was informative about the formation of the lake and the traditional life of the Mayan people. We didn't see sandy beach areas to throw out a blanket and sit by the lake.

San Juan la laguna gave us so many things to do and see. we hired a local guide to talk to us about the spectacular murals and artist in town. we hiked the mirador. toured a honey farm. enjoyed serval meals. One that stands out was the Cafe Alma De Colores. it promotes social inclusion of people with disabilities. they also have a wonderful gift shop, with handcrafted items that support this population. visiting the street of sombras and the steert of umberellas. As a former coffee buyer, I've been fortunate enough to experience a wide range of beautiful countries throughout the world, and Guatemala is my absolute favorite. I wanted to take my wife to see this beautiful country for the first time on our 25th anniversary, and fortunately, we landed upon El Picnic! It seems evident to me that this is absolutely the best place to stay in Atitlan. Because the temperatures are consistently cool in the evenings year round with 13-17C (57-62F) at night, the glamping experience of sleeping outside is a no-brainer! The places to stay at El Picnic are beautifully elegant and very impressive architecturally. One of the things I often worry about with AirBnb's and glamping resorts is whether or not they have good bedding and mattresses; no concern with this place, we had a great bed, it was super comfortable with a very charming bathroom as well. You would be hard pressed to wake up to a better view anywhere else in the world. View and comfort aside, Jochen and Gaby are excellent hosts. Gaby was very helpful in arranging transport and providing useful tips in visiting surrounding areas; Jochen is an exceptional chef, mixologist and baker. I can go on and on about the outstanding cuisine, coffee, rum cocktails and fresh baked bread with every meal! Suffice to say, we will be coming back next year. The guests were a pleasure to meet and get to know as well, places like this always seem to attract interesting and fun people. El Picnic has an awesome culture, it's conviviality at its finest!
