FAQs about hotels on Crete
Centuries of History, Days of Sunshine
The largest Greek island, mountainous Crete has stunning beaches, plenty of history and as much or little nightlife as you want. Party town Malia has many bars, clubs and restaurants on its Strip.
Along the coast is the capital Heraklion, a bustling city home to many Crete hotels on the beach, and a Venetian castle guarding its port. Its archaeological museum includes finds from the island’s Minoan era, while just inland are the Roman remains of Knossos.
Also boasting a Venetian castle is Rethymnon, a popular resort with a good number of Crete hotels with private pools on Booking.com. Loggerhead turtles nest in season on the sandy beaches here and at Chania, an important port with an attractive waterfront set against the backdrop of mountains.
On the other side of the island is Aghios Nikolaos, a small fishing town with a picturesque harbour. Just north is Elounda, a popular family resort, and offshore is Spinaloga island, inspiration behind the book ‘The Island’. Matala in the south has a bohemian vibe and intriguing cliff dwellings, while Paleokastro in the east borders Europe’s largest palm forest at Vai.
We could go on and on about magnificent Crete beaches, but whichever resort you choose, you can be almost guaranteed fantastic food and a good helping of sunshine.

- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.2Superb - What previous guests thought, 2,081 reviewsWe couldn't have been happier with our choice of a hotel! It's located a few kilometers outside of the center and the old town but this was only a positive thing for us - lying by the pool (a big and clean pool for that matter) it was actually calm and quiet with only some birdsong to be heard. The hotel also provided a free shuttle every half an hour to the center and back so the distance was not an issue whatsoever. The staff was a m a z i n g, I can't compliment them enough. It must've been the warmest welcome I've received at any hotel, in any country, and they kept being so genuinely kind and helpful for our whole stay. The restaurant upstairs offers you the best sunset view in town and we actually ended up having dinner there almost every night since the food was also great there. The breakfast buffet was so great as well, with a big variety of food and omelets made to order. If (and hopefully, when) I return to Chania, I will definitely stay at Royal Sun again.Guest review byHeidiFinland
- From US$878.76 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.2Superb - What previous guests thought, 254 reviewsEverything is great. From arrival to the rooms. We were lazy to leave the hotel but meals were good plus Beach restaurant changes menu everyday so it does not become boring. More importantly staff. Sophia , she is everywhere. Nathalia at the reception. Yorgos at the restaurant , he is following all the details. Agyris at breakfast. Very good idea, hôtel give information everyday about nice beach to visit next day according to meteo. Even though we did not move. Architecture is great. Hotel looks as if absorbed to the nature. Even rooms are close you have privacy.Guest review byERDEMSwitzerland

From the moment we arrived, the staff was incredibly thoughtful, attentive, and always ready to help with a smile. The food was excellent, with a wide variety of delicious options that catered to every taste. It's a very family-friendly place, and we felt completely at ease with our child throughout the stay. The garden is absolutely beautiful – a peaceful and well-maintained space that made our time there even more relaxing. We truly enjoyed our stay and would gladly come back!Guest review byNorinaHungary
- From US$176.84 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.9Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 942 reviewsThe hotel is excellent from all aspects. Super clean, quiet though in the middle of the town, very close to everything, beautiful pool and breakfast area, correct pricing and excellent service. They gave me an upgraded room without even asking and the room had welcome drinks and fruits. They also accommodated my need for an early check in. Must note that breakfast has fresh orange juice something you don’t find even in top expensive hotels. I was really pleased from my stay and will stay again in the future.Guest review byAydieGreece

Chania has everything - history, charm, restaurants, shops, plenty to do and see, or simply for sea and sand, which are in walking distance. We did two coach trips, and didn't need to hire a car. The locals were kind and funny and relaxed - great atmosphere.Guest review bySusan - 6.0
The town was buzzing and full of life.
The town was buzzing and full of life. Some excellent restaurants (peskesi a stand out) Beaches were stunning especially when blessed with perfect summer weather. BUT, the traffic is terrible, parking is difficult, road-rules are optional and the lane-ways are very narrow. Visiting Knossos is an absolute must.Guest review byGeorgeAustralia - 10.0
Amazing Resort and extensive facilities on site.
Amazing Resort and extensive facilities on site. Staff are amazing. Also one of the best mani/pedi I ever had at the salon. Resort is about 30 minutes from airport, and would say for a 5* Europe resort, this lives up to expectation, but don't compare to a 5* Caribbean or Mexico Resort, so bear that in mind. We stayed at the Ocean view room which had spectacular views. The Rocky beach was just fantastic with the lounges and beds, and considering how busy this resort is, never noticed it and never felt overcrowded, and you never had to reserve benches or lounges by the beach or pool, there was more than enough to go round and even more spare. A la Carte restaurants that were amazing and my favourites are Umi (Sushi), Azzuro (Italian), Thalassa for breakfast & lunch, Poseidon. A real let down of the restaurants was Nami, only delicious items were the Starters. Staff at this resort were fantastic overall, but special thanks to the following: Anastasi, Konstantina, Angelina, Ritsa and Lucas.Guest review byBandeleUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Charming and beautiful.
Charming and beautiful. Rethymno by day is a semi-bustling city and by night comes to life as a relaxing beautiful paradise. The beaches are heavenly with easy access and the old town precinct is truly wonderful. For a magnificent family dining experience, we thoroughly enjoyed the hospitable people at Evanthia’s. Enjoy the Rakomelo!Guest review byGeorgeAustralia - 10.0
Agios Nikolaos is a beautiful, clean, and very friendly...
Agios Nikolaos is a beautiful, clean, and very friendly little city. The central hub is around the pretty lake and harbour, the south of which leads to the cruise ship port (best avoided). The north, which is more residential, is where we found the best beach, restaurants, bars, and supermarkets. There's not a huge amount to do if (like us) you don't drive - technically Knossos is in reach by a 50min taxi or almost 2 hours on buses, which would've been too much of a stretch in the 30C+ heat. However, the local museum has loads of interesting artefacts (just beware it closes at 15:30), and the nearby olive farm that has animals and does free tastings and cooking and pottery workshops (workshops need to be booked in advance) was a highlight of our trip. We ended up spending loads in the very reasonably priced shop. There's also some decent boat trips on offer, depending on how much you want to pay. We did one of the main cruises up to Spinalonga island, which is well worth a visit (just be aware that it's not very accessible, especially if you want to climb to the top), and the semi sub boat trip was great fun. If you're looking for a party town then look elsewhere, but if you want to chill out and enjoy some amazing food and drink then Agios is a hidden gem.Guest review byKeithUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Kissamos offered us a wonderful mix of relaxation and local charm. The nightlife was a pleasant surprise, with cozy bars and lively tavernas where we enjoyed delicious food and drinks. Evening walks through the town square and the nearby streets filled with local shops and traditional products were some of the highlights of our stay. It's a great place for couples looking for a laid-back yet authentic Cretan experience.Guest review byKonstantinosGreece - 8.0

Difficult to judge because we came early in the season when there was a cold wind blowing and not all the places were open. However, there didn't seem to be many places to eat [not a problem for us as there was one excellent place, though would be a problem peak season] . There were a number of apparently abandoned and ill-maintained buildings, which made the place appear less attractive.Guest review byAMELIAUnited Kingdom - 10.0

It was very pretty and friendly, not too busy although I imagine it would be earlier in season. We visited end Aug into Sept. Lots of choice of restaurants and bars. Can get the bus to surrounding towns and villages or boat trips round the coast. Close to the island of Spinalonga which is interesting to visit.Guest review byDianeUnited Kingdom - 10.0

A very good base for very many superb beaches in southern Crete, with a nice beach within the town, some great shops and very good eating options both within the town and the surrounding villages. Not spoiled by mass tourism as many other places in the island, yet neither too remote and hard to reach. Just perfect.Guest review byANGELIKIGreece
