I am very impressed with Newcastle and the new architecture and urbanisation, it’s been just under 20 years since my last visit. I definitely won’t leave it that long again, I’ll definitely be going early next year. I met some great people in some great real ale bars in Gateshead and Newcastle and have taken around 900 photos from my travels to Whitley Bay, Tynemouth on the Metro train.

Sunderland proved a much better base for exploring this area (E Durham and Tyneside) than Newcastle, where I stayed last time. Less busy, certainly safer. Sunderland is still going through a transition from its industrial past, I'd say it's handling the process pretty well.

I was there for business, it was a lovely place to visit, so close to Newcastle and the surrounding areas. Wish I could have stayed longer to do some more exploring. The roads were quiet, and the area was clean. Loved the Angel of the North

Great place. Used to visit a lot when I was a child.

Great place. Used to visit a lot when I was a child. The Spanish City retains the silhouette but none of it's original charm, however, Dire Straits have managed to cement that into my memory. The beach is still as beautiful as it was decades ago, and the surf is as reliable. A great place to visit always. Wrap up in the winter and and casual in the summer. Travel a few miles south to Cullercoats and Tynemouth and South Shields and Roker beaches. These are hidden gems that would be a shame never to visit. A truly beautiful part of the world.

Marvelous array of barbers, charity shops and betting shops. Town Centre is awful although outlying areas are scenic. Saw several crack heads fumbling around in oblivion trying to find their footwear whilst on another planet (Beach Road). Never again, grim.

I would have liked to have given a better review but unfortunately we had an issue with a faulty oven & hob. Although the electrician attended he was unable to rectify the issue concluding a new oven was required. This left us with only the hob which also tripped out if using more than one ring. Gordon offered us a full refund if we booked out after one night. However this was not acceptable as we had events planned for Saturday. Also, as we had planned to self cater we had bought in food which was wasted and we had to dine out with unexpected expenditure. i.e Friday evening & Saturday evening. Gordon offered a reduction of £100.00 which we thought reasonable, & accepted. We appreciate Gordon would have no control over the oven issue & being weekend there was little that could be achieved until working weekday.

Tynemouth is a lovely classy seaside resort with a beautiful beach called Long Sands. The castle is worth a visit and there are lots of interesting shops, restaurants and bars. You can walk to Cullercoats in fifteen mins and another fifteen minutes further to Whiteley Bay which is also worth a visit.

We knew abought Houghton le Spring already. We needed to be in Stanley, Durham, and East & West Rainton so hotel was ideally situated. We used the in-house Restaurants & Bar on 3 nights and the Italian Restaurant across the road ! night.. There are bus routes outside the Hotel - I believe maximum fare of £2.00.

The people were lovely and friendly.

The people were lovely and friendly. But, this is not and upmarket place to stay. It was full of drunks and druggies (even the taxi driver and the electrician said this) It was just like some of the worst council estates we have here in the UK. I didn't go out at night with the dog because of this. There were quite a few pit bulls around, including the one upstairs. The property itself was ok and comfortable, but left a lot to be desired. The cutlery drawer was at ground level, there were slugs on the worktop every other morning and the fridge was awkward to open - you had to shut the kitchen door to get into it! But the owner was helpful and friendly.

The coastline is breathtaking in any season.

The coastline is breathtaking in any season. Transport links are great so there is no need to use a car while staying in the area. Metro stations and bus services can be combined to explore the wider area. Local people are friendly and the cafes are excellent, especially The Boatyard at Cullercoats and Coffee and Cream at Whitley Bay.
