We stayed for a week and had plenty of time to explore the local museum (you have to do the roundhouse tour), the Isle of Whithorn, the cliffs with the singing seals, Wigtown, the beach at Garlieston... all on foot and by public bus. No mass tourism, everyone is super friendly and accommodating.

We stayed here 19 years ago, and decided to return. Everything was exactly the same as previous. The accommodation is extremely well kept and maintained to a high standard. It's slightly smaller than "The Pend" next door but the kitchen in The Precinct House" is stunning with a large Electric Aga which I've loved cooking on. Shower room/Toilet is very neat and tidy. And upstairs both bedrooms are beautifully decorated. We will go back a little bit sooner next time.

Chris at Cornmill House has one room on the ground floor, overlooking the estuary that's literally on the other side of the narrow street. The room has everything that you could possibly want, or maybe forgot to pack, and is very comfortable. Very thoughtful. The Harbour Inn just a few hundred metres down the road does great food and drink. It's small, and you'd be wise to book a table.

We were 4 bikers on a weekend trip. Upon arrival we’re given a lovely warm welcome. Showed to our chalet which was spotless clean. Proximity to the main was fab just a short walk or stagger back. Will definitely be back. Thank you

Lovely part of Scotland that is greatly overlooked

Lovely part of Scotland that is greatly overlooked Newton Stewart is a great base for exploring the wider area with good cycle path along River Cree down to Wigton. Area is fantastic for cycle touring.Loved the quiet roads on the Machar down to and around Isle of Whitehorn/ Port William, parts of the cycle route to Gatehouse on Fleet and used a car to get to different start points to explore around Kirkcudbright and Dalbeattie, and around Mull of Galloway( northern section especially lovely sea views to Ailsa Craig). Sadly not impressed with parts of Sustrans routes (poorly maintained or shocking surface for road bikes on sections of the signed route thro Cally Palace and to Gatehouse before Creetown, and parts of old Military Road seemed v neglected. We even returned on part of A75 to avoid the worst sections of this route around Stronord!) Great ride from Stranraer to Girvan via New Luce and Barrhill and caught the train back-the train ride alone is an experience to enjoy. We enjoyed days of carefree cycling thanks to some great weather. Really appreciated the efforts to make this part of Scotland cycle friendly and safe. It was good to see others enjoying the same.

    Well worth the journey.

Well worth the journey. The roads were so quiet and the scenery was breathtaking. We enjoyed a lovely meal at The Steampacket; my starter was exceptional. They brew their own beer, Five Kings, and my husband can’t stop telling everyone how good it was. We enjoyed a live music night and the atmosphere was welcoming and friendly.

To be honest, it wasn't just Wigtown, but many villages and towns throughout the area, that simply don't lend themselves to eating out in the evening. When you're self catering, AND you have access to a reasonable supermarket, it's probably less of a problem, but if you're in a B&B, you're at a disadvantage. It's easy to be complacent if you live in an urban town, but clearly footfall is more of a problem in Dumfries & Galloway, unlike the other tourist hotspots in Scotland. Some places don't even have a local pub, so forward planning is essential.

The Galloway area exists in a different time zone to the rest of the UK ! Kirkcowan is very (and I mean very) quiet. The roads are almost empty most of the time and things happen at their own pace. Kirkcowan offers no night life or anything like that, it doesn't even have a pub ! So, if that is your thing you will be disappointed. However, if you like restful and relaxing breaks and a slower pace of life, then a holiday here, or anywhere nearby like Wigtown or Whithorn would be ideal. I'd happily live there !

Whithorn doesn't really have any facilities for a great vacation. Only 1 restaurant was open (sandwich £10) , there was only 1 small grocery shop with limited fresh foods. You will need a car to visit the local sights of interest. Expect a long walk from the car park, the cave was over a mile away from the car park. Beautiful scenery, lots of farmland and open spaces. Local bus services not very frequent. Wigton has probably more to do than Whithorn.

Monreith is very quiet, no shops or pub.

Monreith is very quiet, no shops or pub. But there is a beach, you just need to know the tide times. No light pollution at all - was awesome with a full moon, sadly no northern lights, as very cloud & wet for the week we were there. Local shop in Port William & also a pub just the other side - The Cock Inn - but they do not allow dogs.

Views , surrounding area…. It’s very small and quiet. Don’t go if you want fun fairs, sea side shops. There are lots of community hubs that have cafes and that are by the sea or in lovely villages. We ate in the Port William PIRSAC cafe-run to support the inshore lifeboat. They do breakfasts, lunches, snacks and early dinners. Huge portions and lovely staff.
