FAQs about hotels in Lake District

Poetic Artistry at its Best

The inspiration behind many a poet, the serene Lake District has majestic peaks and glorious lakes that form the UK’s largest and most visited national park.

A particular favourite of Wordsworth, Windermere is England’s longest lake and her waters are still plied by historic boats. With a range of luxury Lake District hotels and a Beatrix Potter Museum, the town is connected by cable-operated car ferry to a spot close to Near Sawrey where Miss Potter once lived. Near the lake’s northern tip is popular Ambleside, home of the Stock Ghyll Force waterfall.

A road goes north from here past picturesque Grasmere and Thirlmere lake to Keswick. Set by Derwent Water, this pretty town is overlooked by Skiddaw, while Scafell Pike – England’s highest mountain – is to its south-west. Bassenthwaite lake is north-west, and Glenridding to the east is on the shores of the popular sailing spot of Ullswater, watched over by Helvellyn.

In the Southern Lakes, Coniston is a small village by a lake offering watersports. South-west is the port town of Barrow-in-Furness, and also by the sea is Grange-over-Sands with its long promenade. Kendal is known for its tasty mint cake and has a museum of Lakeland life, as well as a good range of Lake District hotels with pools on Booking.com.

A place we have been to lots of times when we were children and with my own children, so it was lovely to go just with adults. Plenty to see and do. Lovely places to eat and have a drink or a coffee. Loved the Christmas shop. Bought some Lakeland vodka and rum also.

The area was mostly fine.

The area was mostly fine. In some areas the town was looking tired. Absence of any visible street cleaning. We must have passed an area where someone had let their dog foul the pavement at least eight times as we walked up and down to our guest house and back down towards the lake I know it’s individual dog owners where the responsibility lies but even so it’s a big tourist area So one would expect a bit more pride in the area Unfortunately we won’t be rushing back to visit

Ambleside is a honey trap, necessary to help with the millions of tourists visiting the lake district just like keswick, windermere etc. There is peace and quiet to be found quite easily outside but do not expect it in the town. Ambleside is now busy 12 months of the year. Traffic is a pain and parking is in short supply. There are good eating places - not all at tourist prices - and more shops selling outdoor gear than you can shake a stick at
