Lovely old building housing both a small hotel (6 rooms) and a superb restaurant, Thai by Ja, expertly run by Ja and Martin - and with a 15% discount for hotel guests. At £101.75 for the room and breakfast, plus £35.50 for a super meal with two beers, it was a bargain. Almost worth making a special trip to the Isle of Wight for. Hotel check-in is self-service, based on pre-registration and an SMS to tell you your room number and the codes needed to enter the hotel and access your room key. Unfortunately, I didn't get an SMS and arrived to find a locked door quoting an emergency phone number that was diverted to voicemail. However, there was also a sign saying the restaurant, whose entrance is just around the corner of the building, was open. There I found Ja's other very friendly half, Martin, who let me in and gave me the key to my first floor room, room 2. Note that there is no lift and half the rooms are on the second floor. My room was spacious, with a rustic look but it had both underfloor heating and a Daikin heating and airco system plus a modern bathroom. Ja (or Martin) had forgotten to put out any towels but this was quickly remedied by Martin. The room had a spacious cupboard with 6 clothes hangers and a safe, plus a chest of drawers, two bedside tables, an old workman's table as a desk and a fan, as well as the very comfortable bed, two antique industrial stools, an armchair, a Nespresso-type coffee machine, a ketlle and a hairdryer (see the comment below about the shower). For my taste, there were two minor negatives: I don't much like hotel rooms with carpeted floors or so-called rain showers, above the bath moreover, which mean that it's difficult to shower without getting your hair wet. There was ample lighting and some 8 power points, though none in the bathroom.

This hotel is really a hidden gem. I do admit that we found it by chance, and this sure was one lucky chance. Great hotel in an old building. The people working there, more or less made us feel more like family than guests, without in any way being invasive. They always had time for a little chat, and very politely suggesting things to see, and places to eat. I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the Isle of Wight.

FAQs about hotels on Isle of Wight

Wonders of Wordplay and Nature’s Way

With dramatic cliffs and unspoilt countryside, the Isle of Wight sits off England’s south coast. Ferries from Southampton cross The Solent to Cowes, a sleepy port which bursts into life during its annual regatta – Cowes Week.

Over the inlet is Osborne House, Queen Victoria’s summer home, while Henry VIII was behind the construction of the castle in Yarmouth. Neighbouring Freshwater is the closest town to the multi-coloured sands of Alum Bay. Next door are the Needles which you can’t thread, as the Wonders of the Isle of Wight saying goes. These eroded white cliff formations, one with a lighthouse, extend into the English Channel at the island’s south-western tip.

Near the southern tip is Chale, next to Blackgang Chine children’s amusement park, and close to Ventnor, on a hill sloping to the sea. Around the coast are the most popular beach resorts: Sandown with its nature reserve, and Shanklin with its cute Old Village and the most Isle of Wight hotels with indoor pools on Booking.com. Seaview also has a nature reserve, and nearby Ryde is a Victorian beach resort whose long pier is the docking point for ferries from Portsmouth.

Other hotels on the Isle of Wight are found in Wootton Bridge, with its steam railway, and the county town Newport, home to Carisbrooke Castle.

Fantastic location of this beautiful, historic hotel. The views were amazing, across to the pier, hover Port and the mainland. The staff were so friendly and welcoming, and allowed us to drop off our copious luggage and use facilities prior to check-in time. Our room was very fresh and clean, comfy beds and a lovely view, well-supplied with tea and coffee and also toiletries. Breakfast was delicious and served in a beautifully appointed dining room with very pleasant staff.

Some staff were kind friendly.

Some staff were kind friendly. Disliked · The bed was extremely uncomfortable, for the price charged for the room, I spent both nights on the floor, the mattress was very old and soft in the middle, the most uncomfortable 2 nights with the worst bad back ever, to the point our next hotel had the best bed but I had to undo damage done to my back before I could enjoy the perfect hard bed. I paid for breakfast for both of us on both mornings but when ordered we were told there is a charge for cooked breakfast we ordered one cooked breakfast on the first day, on checking out, we were told nothing to pay, how does that work? We could have had 4 breakfast, so we were short changed for 3!

Cowes is quite busy and noisy, but we expected that. If you want a quiet IOW break, choose one of the resorts on the other side of the island, but for the buzz of the world's yachting capital stick to Cowes. Bus services to all parts of the island are frequent and plentiful.

A very nice walk, with various shops, cafes, ice cream parlours and the river and sea views. Big car park with easy access and a variety of ways to pay. The ground is flat, no hills. Lovely to sit and watch boats big and small. Toilets are easy to find. Accommodation is plentiful and the ferry is easy to access form Yarmouth. Freshwater was ok but the beach was not dog friendly so we went to Compton beach a few times, the dog loved it. Quaint old fashioned English seaside town.

Quaint old fashioned English seaside town. Plenty of choice as far as eating is concerned both during the day and in the evening. If anything the town suffers generally from under investment but that seemed to be the case with most of the towns on the Isle of Wight. It's quite a walk from the esplanade into the town but there is plenty to make the walk worthwhile with lovely bakeries and several cafeterias. The botanic gardens are lovely with another good cafeteria and you can walk there from the town centre and come back along the coast path via Steephill Bay which is well worth the diversion.

The cleanliness of the caravan which was carried out by Aimee and Laura - brilliant team and thank you. The area is nice and a walk around the lake is peaceful. The kiddies play park area is small but close to the restaurant which is helpful. The restaurant was over priced - a small bottle of coke £4.40 and beef burgers from 17.95 ! The food was tasteless and you did not get a lot for your money. The wait was over an hour - simply not impressed at all. If you want a good meal take yourself to the Crab in Shanklin where a kiddies meal will cost you £3.95 and it is bigger than the adult meal at Rookley. The restaurant was closed on the following evening so no take away available (for those who may have wanted to use it) There was no reasons the staff did not seem to know the answer. The indoor swimming pool dirty - the water was not clear and the bottom and sides of the pool were slimy - I would not use it again - just because you can smell chlorin does not mean the pool is clean! The lifeguards did not look particularly bothered about was what going on - maybe their wages are too low!? There is a night club which has kiddie evenings - so for a family that is nice - It is a real shame as all the facilities are on site but are just not available. If the aim is self-catering then do that and check around the area for reasonably priced pubs and cafes -
