LaFleche is a quaint down on the Le Loir, it's lovely to walk around, and sit in the streetside cafes, with a small offering of essential shops. The hotel Kyriad is perfectly place on the edge of town by a lake and beach, near 4 nice restaurants, and leclercks just over the road There is also an excellent municipal camp site with a pool etc. It's also very convenient for Lemans .and chateau's. The town is pleasant and very walkable.
The town is pleasant and very walkable. The chateau is smaller than better-known ones to the east, but its charm and beautiful exhibits, coupled with the unique history of the house and gardens, makes it a definite destination. The chateau hosts a famous garden festival in late May. There are also Gallo-Roman ruins worth exploring within 10 km, with a pleasant picnic area. This was a nice stop over place on our trip. The room and the hosts were really nice. Breakfast was good and there was free parking. We went into town to look at the old city and have dinner. Le Mans is somewhat dull.
Le Mans is somewhat dull. The cathedral is impressive but the old town, compared to others I have visited, is rather underwhelming. We stayed there whilst travelling down, and then back up, France. That was enough. I wouldn't return and wouldn't recommend it to friends. Le lude is fairly typical of french towns, the soul is dying and locals struggling to maintain services. Eg, bar centrale is shut, rose and crown open but no snacks, shops closed up, tatty appearance generally. The location is about a 15 minute drive to the old Gallo-Roman walled city of Le Mans which is quaint with numerous timbered buildings and narrow winding streets. The Cathedral of St Julien is huge with numerous beautiful stained-glass windows, one of which is the oldest in the world. In the past the town was abandoned but in recent years was extensively restored and is frequently used as a film set for epic films, eg Cyrano de Bergerac. As parking is limited in the old town, it is wise to park in one of the several very large free car parks by the river. From here the best view of the Gallo-Roman walls and towers surrounding the town can be seen. There is a short climb up a series of steps to the old town which is well worth a visit. Best to visit during the week because very little is open on a Sunday, including places to eat. The Le Mans Country Club at Yvre-l'Eveque is an ideal place to stop for a day or two en route to destinations further south, especially if you like fine food. Le Mans is also the home of the 24 hour Race and there are several Museums to visit.Guest review byRosemaryUnited Kingdom
