This is our second stay with Tatjana and Ludwig, this time with kids. Gruner Baum is the perfect spot in the the Black Forest and everything about it, from the clean and comfortable rooms, the view of the forest and the delicious breakfast, are unmatched. Tatjana and Ludwig are gracious, entertaining and funny. They were always available to help with anything we needed. Highly recommended for couples or families. It is a beautiful property set in a majestic landscape. The room was beautiful with an extraordinary view of the valley below. Our room was modern and very clean with a lovely balcony to enjoy a glass of wine or a beer. The pool facilities were great and the hotel lets you “book” 30 minute slots for the pool (due to Covid), however, this worked perfectly for us, as it made it feel as if it was our own private pool area. Finally, the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend this hotel for a short or long stay.

We were only there for about 24 hours. Unfortunately, it was a Sunday and most things were closed with the exception of restaurants and a few shops. However, Freiburg im Breisgau did not disappoint. It is such a cute town and very walkable! The architecture is amazing! I hope to come back for a longer length of time!

A small town known for its thermal springs (Vita Classica baths and thermal clinics). Located not far from Freiburg and having good public transport connections, it allows visitng the area which is reach in sights and attractions, including beautiful nature for hiking. Perfect for a stay over a weekend or for a longer stay for thermal treatment.

We were turned away by the hotel as were not vaccinated.

We were turned away by the hotel as were not vaccinated. The receptionists said we should have looked up Google to find out if we could stay in that region of Germany.. I do believe that booking.com should have informed us. We had been driving for many hours from the Netherlands, I am 80 years old so was exhausted. Also the hotel should have told us before arrival. We carried on to Switzerland as the only option where we found a decent hotel. I am shocked to see that have since been charged the full amount by this hotel.

This is a very good base for exploring the region, especially with the free bus and rail pass. The buses are regular and punctual, and connect with the main railway line at the next village up, Denzlingen. The village itself is really beautiful and, although there are lots of hotels, has kept its character. I recommend visiting the local wine cooperative. The local red wine in particular is quite unlike the generic stuff we are usually offered in the UK and well worth trying and bringing some home.

Ancient town (the castle is 12 century) with wonderful restaurants, bars, peacefulness, and lots to do in its vicinity. I never had a bad meal or a bad drink at all the places I visited. The cross-country mountain biking is endless. Freiburg is only 18kms away. The significance of this for me, is the international train station, which I used for trips to Switzerland, and the Basel Mulhouse airport is only a one hour bus ride away. This airport serves most of Europe through EasyJet. The people of Staufen are also very kind and hospitable, so much so, we now have friends there. Give it a go.

The old town is gorgeous, really characterful. We loved the market square - if you like cheesecake, Stefan's Cheesecakes are definitely a must-have. We particularly enjoyed visiting the church. If you can manage the stairs, the view from the top is amazing, and being able to see the bells close up is great. Walking up Schlossberg (or taking the funicular, though it only goes part-way up) is also a must-do, particularly to go up the Aussichtsturm Schlossberg: terrific views. You could easily spend two full days exploring this city at a relaxed pace. Plus there are great walks within a short driving distance.
