For us as western foreigners the whole region was quite different from the picture we typically make ourselves of Japan - much more rural and rather sparsely populated. Very interesting to see and experience. Ken is an excellent host, giving great recommendations and caring for his guests.

We stayed for 2 nights at Hokkoma cottage and loved our stay. The property itself was wonderful, had everything we needed and felt like home. Our trip was focused on taking advantage of Aso's beautiful nature and the cottage's location allowed us to do this. It was also great to know that there was a large bath to use after the hike to soak our tired legs!

We chose Kikuchi instead of Kumamoto, to get away from the city before our trip to Mt Aso. We got a lovely country house, but the main benefit was the lovely couple who hosted us. Super friendly and helpful. I enjoyed breakfast, my wife skipped hers, so the host packed it as a bento box for our lunch. Vegetables from the garden. A guided visit to the forest to see fireflies. Tastes of local food and drink. It was if we were lodging with my favourite aunt and uncle.

Really amazing house and location. We didn't walk to the nearby onsen town, but it is walkable (a bit of a hill), and there are many walking trails around the house. This house has a fence for dogs but we didn't travel with pets and found it made a great yard for our kids to play. The onsen bath in the house is great and there is plenty of space.

フォレスタ阿蘇車帰は阿蘇市にある宿泊施設で、えがお健康スタジアムまで24km以内、熊本城まで33km以内です。水前寺公園から約33km、旧細川刑部邸から約33km、平山温泉から約45kmの宿泊施設です。山の景色を望むエアコン付きのお部屋にはデスクと無料WiFiが備わります。... We spent two nights here as a couple. The staff greeted us kindly and were very accommodating and helpful. The property is beautiful and overlooks Mt.Aso. We decided to use the grill our first night and they set up everything for us and even recommended a store where we could go to buy meat and other supplies. (We forgot to buy grilling utensils, the staff let us borrow some :), but I would recommend bringing your own. The meat was delicious and it paired well with the atmosphere of the property. My husband and I don't speak Japanese really but the staff worked with us to communicate in Korean/English. We had the twin bed room and it was very nice. The beds were comfortable and the air conditioning made it very nice. The room had a bathtub and we took a bath both nights it was so relaxing. The whole cabin had a wonderful woody smell. After dinner we went outside and went star gazing. The night air was crisp and the sky was beautiful. Mosquitos were minimal and the night air was full of the sounds of the forest. We could even see the milky way! We also woke up early to watch the sunrise over Mount Aso right from the deck in front of our room. The view was breathtaking~ Overall I'd highly recommend staying here if you want to experience the Japanese countryside the right way!
