The Gran Hotel La Perla, right in the heart of Pamplona, was Ernest Hemingway's favourite destination when he visited the city. La Perla was our first real contact with Spanish hospitality; this overthrew all preconceptions of standoffishness. Front desk staff could not do enough for us! The public areas of the hotel are beautifully kept and feature the work of local artisans for sale, images of the rich and famous who patronised the hotel, and historic bullfighting artefacts. Our room was well-appointed with view to a back street which is part of the Encierro. Breakfast was generous, with cold and hot components. The breakfast room was well-served by a few staff members at this slow time of year. At a room rate which was discounted by 40%, we couldn’t look past this grand old hotel on Pamplona’s main square.
