If you want to discover the Toraja culture, look no further. No book nor improvised guide will be able to explain you such a complex culture in details. Hendrik (the owner) organized everything for us, being a Toraja himself, he took us on a tour of the traditional villages, while giving us tons of information about their rituals, beliefs, and social structure. We've also been lucky enough to witness a traditional Toraja funeral, an experience I'll never forget. This has been the most interesting (and true) experience we had during the entire trip in Indonesia, no tourist traps, no fake shows mocking Indonesian traditions. For a brief moment, we've been part of an ancient and beautiful culture, wish i could have stayed longer. Recommended 10/10

Best place to stay in Toraja. The host, Mama Valen, and the whole family really did their absolute best so we could have the best stay in Tana Toraja. - she helped us in finding a guide for the Rambu Solo funeral. - the place is very comfortable, spacious, quite and clean. - The bathroom is completely new. Toilet and shower are separated, there is hot water and a clean towel per person. - food was delicious - she prepared breakfast everyday for us. You can also have lunch and dinner and we really liked it. - they picked us up and dropped us off on the bus station without any extra charge. - my boyfriend got sick and they helped us in getting to the medical clinic and translating the problems to the doctor. - Mama valen also did the laundry for us. - the whole family is lovely and always very helpful. We definitely recommend this place 100%.

Yacob, Yansen, Mama Tia and the rest of the family were amazing in their hospitality. Their homestay is simple and rustic but is also very homely. The rooms are very clean with a nice inside communal area as well as a very nice verandah where you can sit and appreciate the view of the neighbouring fields and ponds. If you are used to and looking for luxury comfort, then this is probably not the place for you, but if you appreciate simplicity and character then it is. Yacob and Yansen also provide guiding services which I would highly recommend They will tailor the tour to what the guests want to see. I would highly recommend visiting the funeral ceremonies with Yacob/Yansen. They provide a lot of good local insights. Also, staying at Mama Tia's was great because the communal areas encourage mingling with the other guests. While I we there, I met 3 French couples, a French and a German girl. I travelled with a few of these people north to the Bunaken Islands and Gorontalo. Thanks to Mama Tia's that I made such good friends.

It was a really lovely place to base ourselves for a short stay in the area, Rian and James really welcomed us into their home, sharing their space with us. You feel like part of the family but we still had space for ourselves too. Toraja is a beautiful place with rich history and culture.
