Patan is one of the most beautiful and interesting parts of the wider city of Kathmandu, and one of the Kathmandu Valley’s seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites. While it’s a popular day trip destination for travelers staying in central Kathmandu, by staying at the Patan Community Homestay you can explore further than you would on a day tour.
At the heart of Patan is the Durbar Square, or old royal palace and surrounding temples. It’s still a focal point of local Patan life. As well as the many beautiful temples and statues here, you can visit the excellent Patan Museum, in the old palace building, for a thorough introduction to Kathmandu’s architecture. Other nearby temples you shouldn’t miss include the multi-tiered Bangalmukhi Temple, Hiranya Varna Mahabihar (also known as the Golden Temple), the Rudra Varna Mahabihar monastery, and the Mahabuddha Temple of 1000 Buddhas.
