Property information
Originally constructed during the Meiji Period (early 1900s), the exterior of this machiya house features classic Takayama architectural details. These include 'gobun nuri' (white-painted exposed beam ends) and 'mushikomado' windows. The first floor walls are crafted in earthen plaster by a renowned local 'sakan shokunin' (plaster craftsman).
Step through the 'noren' entrance curtains to discover a spacious ground floor that artfully incorporates the interplay of shadow and light. The warm, dark wood of the architecture is perfectly balanced by natural light filtering through the 'tenmado' ceiling windows. Gather around the 'irori'-inspired dining table, reminiscent of the sunken hearths found in traditional Shirakawago houses, or unwind in a luxurious hinoki wood bathtub.
This machiya house offers three bedrooms, ideal for family and friend groups. Two classic tatami rooms are available on both floors, each accommodating up to two futon beds. The second floor features an additional Western-style bedroom with high ceilings and a spacious king-size bed.
