Company information

We are a Japanese / American couple who have always loved countryside life and finally found our dream location. He is a former IT pro but now working in the cycling industry. And she is a bi-lingual administrative expert who loves animals, cooking and enjoying the outdoors hiking, cycling and gardening. We are both working hard to promote a sustainable, local as possible lifestyle and include alot of foods from our own garden as well as neighbors into our meals.

Property information

Astuto Riders House is part of an Edo period 160yo Japanese Farm Supply House located on the historic Nakasendo Trail Route (Matsuida Juku). It features 2, rustic guest rooms in traditional Japanese style for rest / stay. The property has integrated a small cafe and attached bike shop to provide full service for travelers (hiking, cycling or riding). We do own (and love) pets. Please be advised that a dog and several cats may be on hand to greet you! Though our furry friends are never allowed into the guest rooms. If you have any allergies to dog or cat then do please let us know and consider this in your booking. We have also upgraded the power supply to the house and is now more than 70% solar self-sufficient, making it ideal for those looking for ultimate sustainable travel options. We are cyclist / cycling, hiking friendly and offer onsite bike and equipment rentals. Whether you wish to ride 1 day or a week we are available to support almost any cycling dream-stay. For those hiking or cycling the historic Nakasendo Trail, we are directly on the road at Ichirizuka 33 and you can start (or transit) your journey with a stay in an authentic, Edo era, Nakasendo structure. Our place was among those constructed especially for the Princess Kazunomiya procession and served as a vital supply / rest depot along the trail.

Neighbourhood information

Location is the historic village of Matsuida Machi which is at the base of Mt. Myogi. it's a quiet farming hamlet but also very close to the train station and nearby expressway. We are directly on the Nakasando historic road (Old Nakasendo) and close to many landmarks and great cycling and walking tours. Our region is famous for many foods including konyaku, cabbage, nasu, rice, pork and beef. And of course the famous Shimonita Negi (scallions) and Kamameshi (rice pot) which originated just a short distance in Yokokawa. There are also various onsens (including tattoo friendly) nearby for relaxing the days' hikes away.
