Located in the vibrant heart of Florence, the property at Via de’ Cerretani 1 is situated in a neighborhood that perfectly embodies the fusion of the city’s rich history and its lively modernity. This area, connecting the Santa Maria Novella station to Piazza del Duomo, is a crossroads of culture, architecture, and daily Florentine life.
Via de’ Cerretani takes its name from the noble Cerretani family, originally from Cerreto Maggio, who owned several properties in the area. Over the centuries, the street has undergone various transformations, especially during the period when Florence was the capital of Italy, when it was widened and modernized to improve connections between the train station and the city center.
Just a few steps from the property stands the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the oldest churches in Florence. Although its origins date back to the 8th century, its current appearance is the result of Gothic renovations and subsequent interventions. Particularly interesting is the bell tower, famous for the “Head of Berta,” an enigmatic sculpture that has inspired numerous local legends.
At the corner of Via de’ Cerretani and Via Borgo San Lorenzo stands the Torre dei Marignolli, a 14th-century tower house that once belonged to the Marignolli family. Despite the modifications it has undergone over the centuries, the structure retains medieval architectural elements, such as the drawbridge holes and sculpted family crests.
Opposite the property, in Piazza dell’Unità Italiana, rises the Palazzo dei Cerretani, a historic building that has housed several noble families over the centuries. Today, the palace is home to regional offices and the Pietro Leopoldo Library, which hosts photographic exhibitions and various cultural initiatives.
