Myrsini’s Castle House is situated in the Byzantine Castle of Monemvasia, by the western walls
of the Castle and only a few meters from the Castle Gate. Built in the 18th century, it reached its current
form in 1898. The house was bought by the hostess’s father in 1963 and was used as a summer house, up
until 2006, when it became the permanent residence of a family of 4.
In 2020, it received a major restoration, aiming both to preserve and to respect the characteristics
of this beautiful house and also to provide its guests with all modern amenities. Only natural materials
were used for the restoration, i.e. marble, stone, wood, etc, in full compliance with the strict rules of the
Archaeological Committee of Laconia.
The two-store stone house is strategically located very close to the Castle Gate and the main commercial
street of the Castle. Also, it offers great views to the sea, the Citadel and the Upper City.
The house offers two bedrooms, one with en-suite bathroom, a large bathroom, 2 living rooms, a fully
equipped kitchen and a 30 s.m. veranda with sea view.
Born and raised in Athens, I used to spend part of our family summer holidays in our house in the Castle.
The memory of these days are fulled with the endless blue color of the sea, the burning stones of the
narrow streets by to the summer sun, the smell of the oregano and the thyme that grow in the cavities of
the rocks, the song of the cicadas during the day and of the crickets during the night...
In 2006, I decided to leave Athens and its fast ways of everyday life and to move permanently to this
house in the Castle with my life partner. In 2009, our first child was born, Myrsini, who was the first child
of the Castle after 42 years! Three years later, our second child, George, was born. Our children spent the
first years of their lives climbing on the canon and the trees of the main square of the Castle, playing hide
and seek with their friends at the Castle’s walls and the Byzantine ruins, swimming at the Portelo and
greeting everyone they meet at the narrow cobbled streets as if they were the official Hosts of the
Castle...And of course, they’ve always had the impression that they were the Princess and the Prince of
the Byzantine Citadel.
My hope is that our guests at the Myrsini’s Castle House will be captivated by the Castle’s magic, as I
was captivated when I first entered its Gate 40 years ago. And that this magic will keep you captive for
ever, as it has with me...
