Kritinia is a small hilltop village surrounded by a pine forest and located 55 km from Rhodes city. The breathtaking sea view makes the drive to Kritinia one of the most beautiful in Rhodes Island. In the center of the village, there are many traditional coffee shops and taverns serving local food and seafood. Kritinia is the ideal place for hiking where nature lovers can enjoy the unspoiled scenery and the wild vegetation. Nearby the village, Kopria is a wonderful pebbly beach with huge rock formations and nice white sand. The beach has tourist facilities such as a tavern and a few sunbeds with umbrellas. A short drive away, overlooking the sea, is the imposing Venetian Castle of Kritinia, also known as Kastellos, built by the Knights of St. John in 1472 with remains of fortified walls and frescoes in the chapel of St. John. Τhe wild beauty of the landscape is worth visiting the castle. The Cultural Association organizes every year the medieval castle festival of Kritinia on June 29 and 30. Against the background of the golden color of the illuminated castle, you will “travel” back to the Middle Ages and medieval dances and jugglers present a spectacular show with fires and acrobatics. The king and queen walk up the steps of the castle and give the brave knight to the cheers and celebrations of the world with music, plenty of beer and medieval food.
Kamiros Skala is located a short distance away from Kritinia and offers interesting sights to see. The fish taverns of the area are very popular and the visitor can enjoy fresh fish from the Aegean Sea. There is also a small harbor from which boats leave daily for Halki island, an ideal destination for daily escapes.
The village of Monolithos is only 20 km away from Kritinia. It is a touristic and picturesque village which took its name from the big rock, a monolith, hanging above it. On the top of the rock there is a medieval castle with beautiful view and unforgettable sunsets.
