US car rental requirements for international travelers
To rent a car in the US, international travelers typically only need a valid driver’s license if it’s in English. Learn:
- When you need an international driver’s license
- Additional documents needed to drive in the US
- How long you can drive with a foreign license
One of the best ways to explore the United States is by car. Cross-country road trips and scenic drives down the West Coast are much easier if you rent your own car. As an international traveler, you may have questions about whether you can drive in the US or what the car rental requirements are – and we’re here to help you hit the road.
What documents do you need to drive in the US?
Every state has its own laws, so it’s best to check the local DMV websites of the states you’ll be traveling to. However, most states (and rental car companies) require you to have the following documents as a foreign national driving in the US.
Driver’s license
In the US, you can’t rent a car without a license, so the most important thing you’ll need is a valid driver’s license issued by your home country. Your license should have your photograph and remain valid throughout your stay. Photocopies, digital licenses, or learner’s permits aren’t accepted.
International Driving Permit (IDP)
Sometimes referred to as an international driver’s license, an International Driving Permit is a globally accepted document that’s essentially an official translation of your local driver’s license. You’ll need to get an IDP if your driver’s license is in a language that uses non-English letters (such as Russian, Chinese, or Arabic), but it’s good to have it in any case. The United States doesn’t issue International Driving Permits to non-residents, so you’ll need to apply for it in your home country before you travel. Remember, this is a supporting document for a valid driver’s license and can’t be used in place of an actual license or as a form of identification.
Passport
If you’re an international traveler driving in the US, you should always have your passport on you even if you have an International Driving Permit. It acts as your primary form of identification and proof that you’re visiting the country legally. You’ll also need to show your passport at the rental car company, along with your credit card for security purposes.
Canadian citizens renting in the US
You can rent a car in the US with a valid Canadian driver’s license and passport, and drive for up to six months with your Canadian license. If you have an Enhanced Driver's Licence (EDL), you can also present that instead of a Canadian license and passport.
Driving record requirements
Rental car companies have their own set of requirements and may ask for or check your driving record. Depending on their policies, they can cancel or deny a rental if they find certain violations within a specified time period. These can include driving with a suspended, expired, or revoked license; moving violations; reckless driving; DUIs; accidents; and more.
How long can you drive with a foreign license in the US?
Depending on the state, you can drive in the US with a foreign license for three to six months from your date of entry into the country. If you plan to drive longer, you’ll need to get an IDP from your home country, which is valid for a year. Remember that both your driver’s license and IDP must be valid and unexpired for you to drive legally.
