This landlocked country in the Horn of Africa contains archaeological finds thought to date back over three million years, along with ancient ruins and other mysterious landmarks making it a country rich in history. Among the most notable locations are Aksum, a ruined city of ancient tombs and towers in the far north, and Lalibela, with its rock-hewn, 700-year-old churches, also in the northern region. The latter is an important pilgrimage site which you can wander freely. Sprawling capital Addis Ababa sits within the creases of the Entoto Mountains, and presents a myriad of sights. Get some perspective at the Ethnological Museum, which highlights Ethiopia’s cultural and social history, and the National Museum, where the remains of ‘Lucy’ – one of the world’s oldest human fossils – are kept. Later, head to bustling Market Square for a taste of the local life. Then there’s Ethiopia’s staggering lineup of natural wonders. Trek through the soaring peaks of the Simien Mountains, descend to the sulphurous depths of the Danakil Depression, boat between 14th-century monasteries on the islands of Lake Tana, or go wildlife-watching in the Bale Mountains of the south. However you choose to spend your Ethiopian adventure, this country will leave you in awe. A good choice of hotels and guest houses can be found in Addis Ababa. While there are options in the southern national parks, these are fewer in number.
