The minute I set foot in this hotel, I loved it so much that I booked another night. It’s luxurious in every way, yet somehow still homely and intimate. Every member of staff was not only kind and thoughtful in helping me with my bags and storage, accommodating last-minute requests, etc—but went above and beyond to ensure guest happiness. Everyone was incredible and deserves high praise, although I must give special thanks to the head of guest experience (Francine?). Best service I have ever seen, even relative to other 5-star properties. The food was superb…I particularly enjoyed the peri peri chicken, malva pudding, and watermelon chilli mocktail. I also loved this lavender/white chocolate drink they made with nondairy milk…ugh I’m getting hungry just thinking about it! I should also note how conveniently located it is—literally right by Rosebank Gautrain, with nearby shops, restaurants, etc. Thank you for a fabulous stay! This is the only place I wish to return when next in Johannesburg, and I passionately recommend this hotel to all.

I liked everything about my stay, the staff were superb from checkin to checkout (they even went as far as to arranging a nail file to us). Rooms were quite big and very comfy, we had two amazing nights there. The location is not exactly central, but we felt very safe, it is a very nice neighbourhood (there is a Starbucks right across the street, a nice mall next door and many restaurants nearby). Breakfast (to be quite honest) wasn't really great, but they do offer a great and fancy variety of dishes. The highlight of the hotel's facilities though, is the gym. The gym is ridiculously big, there is a floor (yes, a floor) of strengthening (with a rowing machine, air bike, kettlebells, benches, dumbbells, etc), a floor for cardio (with a couple of treadmills, bikes, etc) and a stretching floor (basically a large balcony, not a big deal, but come on, they offer three floors of gym). Also the gym is 24/7 opened. Overall, great great great hotel.

    Wonderful hotel with a great restaurant in a fun, safe area...

    Wonderful hotel with a great restaurant in a fun, safe area of Johannesburg. It is right on the border of a hopping, upscale mall with great food and fun shops. Extremely safe area. Staff was always helpful and genuinely wanted to be in the hospitality field. Can't recommend this hotel highly enough.

    I really enjoyed shopping.

    I really enjoyed shopping. The malls are great and with a variety of outlets, offering many varied shopping options. I also enjoyed fine dinning. Excellent cuisine in Johannesburg. Many different types of restaurants offering all types of cuisines to meet global expectations from global citizens. The Mall of Africa, Sandton City, Gold Reef. The list is endless! Car hires easily accessible at reasonable prices, Uber and Bolt provide other options for easily moving around and about.

    I lived in Johannesburg many years ago (left in 1999), for 21 years - and loved it. However I had not been back. I was very apprehensive as one hears many horror stories. I was pleasantly surprised. I found everyone polite, no aggression. I drove around at night, on my own....felt quite safe. I took a couple of Ubers and they were good. A few potholes, some lines in the roads missing, but the Joburg drivers use their indicators ....all in all a good experience, I never felt threatened or uncomfortable. I flew in at Lanseria airport and stayed in Sandon, visited, Fourways, Northcliffe and Mayfair....Mayfair was a bit downgraded!

    A lovely little oasis in the middle of the city! They really go above and beyond to make sure you have the best stay possible. The entire team is super helpful, the facilities are lovely and it really felt like home away from home, not a hotel. The owners are happy to consult on possible activities and routes and security staff will make sure that you safely get on your uber or if walking, are happy to provide tips for staying safe. Would happily stay here again if in Johannesburg!

    The hotel had a great old world feel about it whilst being equipped to modern standards inside. So often hotels are cookie cutters and you lose the feeling of where you are - the Protea Hotel by Marriott Johannesburg Balalaika Sandton was true to its self and it's city. The staff were fabulous in every team and made us feel very welcome and looked after us like we were family! Food and drinks and chilled evenings in the hotel were all great!

    Right next to the Gautrain station in Rosebank, so super easy to travel to and from the airport. Warm reception when I checked in - I was allowed an early check-in, which made my trip more comfortable (didn't have to sit in some random coffee shop to get work done, great desk in the room). Hotel staff also assisted me with emergency printing. Great breakfast spread and Johannesburg skyline views from the room.

    The hotel was the best choice during my vacation in South Africa. The complex is beautiful, the rooms are nicely furnished with view of the garden and pool. The food in the restaurant was excellent and the breakfast was lovely too. In addition, the staff was particularly nice and attentive. I should have stayed longer.
