FAQs about hotels in Montevideo

Laid-Back South American Capital

Located on the north bank of the Rio de la Plata, the city of Montevideo is Uruguay’s capital, largest city and main harbour and economic hub. Claimed by the Spanish, Portuguese and British, the city reflects today the typical South American cultural patchwork. With a strong Italian and Spanish legacy, its soul dances to the rhythm of tango and the African-influenced ‘candombe’.

With approximately 1.5 million people, it houses almost half of the country’s population. Montevideo has a rich cultural life with important institutions like the Solis Theatre.

Carnival is Montevideo's most significant celebration, and the ‘murgas’ play and dance ‘candombe’ in the streets turning the city into a big party. If you plan to book a hotel in Montevideo for carnival, check the availability beforehand!

Don’t miss the ‘Ciudad Vieja’ old town, the Independence Square and the views from the top of the Salvo Building. The Rodo Park is the most traditional park in the city, while the ‘Rambla’ esplanade offers 13 km of sandy beaches.

Whether you prefer a cosy B&B in the old town, a hotel on the beach, or accommodation near the Carrasco International Airport, check out the Montevideo deals available on Booking.com!

Great modern city by the sea with also lovely old buildings.

Great modern city by the sea with also lovely old buildings. I knew nothing about Montevideo before coming here and ended up staying 6 nights. Visit the Memorial Andes 1972 museum. It's amazing and very moving!

The city is full of life.

The city is full of life. People are friendly, and shopping is great. We especially loved the food. We were surrounded by great restaurants. El Fogon, Bar Facal and La Pasiva in 18 De Julio are especially great. We enjoyed every minute of it.

Montevideo is the capital of a small country whose economy is doing quite well. I was surprised how unattractive the city, as a whole, was. Seems like some paint might be in order, and many blocks exhibited rank neglect. On the way out of town, driving past mile after mile of beach-side high rises, I realized maybe all the money has moved here, away from the downtown area that I had been staying and walking around in. I would highly recommend two wonderful free museums -- the Gaucho and Coin museum in the gob smackingly gorgeous and huge main hall of a bank, and the Design and Decorative arts museum in the Taranco Palacio -- Julian Fellowes eat your heart out. In general I very much enjoyed walking around the Ciudad Viejo, with its beautiful plazas and faded glory residences.

Old town in the evening might be dangerous.

Old town in the evening might be dangerous. Especially for not experienced tourists from Europe or the US. Wake up in the morning and walk along the rambla. You will have a beautiful view of the different Districts and Many public Parks and Beaches of Montevideo .

What a fantastic city!

What a fantastic city! It's mellow, slow, and easy, with plenty of beaches, breweries, coffee shops, and restaurants. Easy to travel between Montevideo and Buenos Aires. I feel like Montevideo is off of most people's radars--and that's a good thing. Folks looking to "go crazy" will (and should) go to BA. Montevideo is incredibly safe, easy to navigate, and the price is right, as well. My advice: Go to Montevideo, but only tell people you trust about Montevideo when you get back! :)

We stayed in Montevideo proper at Cala di Volpe.

We stayed in Montevideo proper at Cala di Volpe. It was exactly the right hotel to stay at. Close to the city center, across the street from the ocean, on the rambla (sea walk and we walked for hours). Two blocks from a shopping center with restaurants and high end stores. I lived in Montevideo as a child for three years as a foreign aid brat back in the 60's and it hasn't changed. It is safe and has a very European feel. I described it to my wife as Italy without Roman ruins or any tourists and she confirmed it was exactly that. It's relaxed and congenial. It's not festive like Rio nor in your face arrogant like Buenos Aires. It's a place to stroll and enjoy the cleanliness of the city.

We chose this hotel for our last 2 nights in Uruguay. We had an Executive Suite on the 10th floor overlooking the River and the City. The Hotel met our every need and expectation We took the opportunity t use the leisure facilities and watching the sunset from the rooftop jacuzzi was extraordinary. We dined in the hotel both nights and Felipe the restaurant manager was attuned to our every need with some excellent recommendations. We left the hotel totally satisfied and at the same time a little sad that our stay was over

The hotel is very modern. The room was on the small side but well laid out, and there’s excellent space to sit on the rooftop and in front and by the lobby. Beds are comfortable. Breakfast is good. Front desk staff are friendly and speak good English. We liked the location, close to the rambla but on a side street so not nearly as much noise as an oceanfront hotel. If you’re keen walkers like us, you can walk the rambla to the old town or east to Carrasco.

Beautiful hotel in a central location in the old town of Montevideo. The staff (Geronimo and Alberto) were absolutely fantastic - they were so friendly, always happy to chat, and gave us lots of advice about local restaurants and bars. This allowed us to enjoy another side of Montevideo, as we visited places with live music and excellent food, alongside locals.

Very charming, classic, old hotel. Interesting elevator, great rain shower heads, patio on rooftop has nice sunset view for a glass of wine. Also the tienda on the corner has reasonable prices (for Uruguay).
