It's a quiet little town. My brother initially lived in Wallowa when they first moved to that side of the mountains. If you prefer a quiet place to stay rather than the hustle and bustle of Joseph then I'd suggest staying in Wallowa and then driving to Joseph and Wallowa Lake during the day for your activities. Joseph is less than 20 miles away. The view of the surrounding mountains both when driving through the canyon to get to Wallowa and once you're in Wallowa are amazing. The majestic mountains are awe-inspiring.

No restaurants were open after 6 PM on a Sunday evening during height of tourism season. We understand though as it was haying season. We were able to buy food at the local grocery store and microwaved our dinners.

It was a quick 30 minute drive into Joseph for some hiking and it was easy to check in and out. We arrived after the 7pm office closure and with a quick call were able to have the room key set aside for easy pick up.
