Ely is a vacated, historic mining town taken over by affluent retired "snowbirds." It is supported by canoers, campers and bicyclists who use the town for their supplies and trailheads. There are longtime residents who can share the town's history, but you have to look to find them.

We visited the Black Bear Exhibit and the Wolf Center.
We visited the Black Bear Exhibit and the Wolf Center. They were both very enjoyable, and we learned so much! Ely is a beautiful place. We spent our honeymoon in Ely 64 years ago and hadn't been back there so decided to spend our 64th anniversary there. We weren't disappointed!

Small quaint town. Great food and very friendly people. Great stagging area if you are visiting Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness. I would highly recommend the outfitter we used - Cliff Wold's Outfitters, professional, friendly, and willing to help you plan your trip. They were great and very reasonably priced. They had multiple levels of services from needing everything to only a canoe. I have all my own gear, so just needed a canoe. This was my first trip to Boundary Waters, so they helped with recommendations for entry points and what your need to get a permit. They were very knowledgable about the area and made great recommendations.

A beautiful small town with great restaurants and shops. Very convenient access to The Boundry Water s Canoe Atea. Scenic drives and The International Wolf Cent and The North American Bear Center were great ti visit. We also hiked a small trail to a water fall.

There are many interesting things to see and do in Ely. Even if you aren't a canoe enthusiast, there is the International Wolf Center, the Bear Center, awesome waterfalls, etc. that accommodate everyone. Shopping is fun. The only thing it lacks is places to go for breakfast. We had a great time and we are seniors The many lakes are beautiful too!
