Enjoyed shopping uncommon items in door to door shops and food German & locally produced. We've scored Local made Arts, crafts furniture and blankets during our shopping. Ate breakfast at the Ronnenburg family style as a great follow up to German food family style at The Ox Yoke Inn the night before. Recommend staying in town at the Hotel Millwright or one of the B & B's for a full relaxing experience.

The time of year that I chose to stay and visit the Amana...

The time of year that I chose to stay and visit the Amana Colonies made for a very quiet, almost dull experience unfortunately. There was a slight lack in public interaction. I felt as if there weren’t as many people out viewing the shops as I thought there would of been. The restaurant I chose to eat at, later that night, had maybe a dozen tables seated through out the whole facility. Nonetheless, there were still enough people to get have a good enough experience, and get a good feel of what a better time of year would have to offer. It was also only my first time visiting and walking around the Amana Colonies and staying at the Mill Wright Hotel. Which I would highly recommend anyone stay a night or two. The Hotel has a very cozy and warm/inviting vibe (could be due to the fact, it’s an old Wool Mill) The artwork, pictures, and old Milling/Sewing machines through out the Hotel, made for a neat experience as well.

Amana is a very small town, but part of a 7 town colony. 17 mile loop was easy to drive. Businesses in Amana were all in close proximity so very walkable. Lots of parking, so very convenient. Really enjoyed the wool mill and store at the Hotel Millwright. Several restaurants with very good food. German based foods mostly, but good variety of foods available. All businesses were open and very inviting. Found some local crafts but not as much as I expected. Woodworking shop was excellent. Still, many nice shops.

Wonderful location in Amana!

Wonderful location in Amana! Beautiful old historic building that I was thrilled with upon arrival. The decor is fantastic and the room looked huge and inviting. However, because the floor is concreted, sound travelled easily. The family with children (next door?) might as well have been in our room. And, every door closing sounded like a slam. It was only quiet from midnight until about 6am. Even those who usually sleep deeply will be woken up throughout the night, for example by the train which runs along the property (only once thank goodness). I recommend trying a 2nd floor room if you book here since ground floor rooms also have to contend with the noise from the exposed water pipes of the floor above.
