This is a town where we rest as we travel from Santander to the Silver Coast in Portugal. We always vow to return to explore the history of this place. One day we will. It is a town that has economic challenges, there are many closed comercial premises. There are some great bars and cafe and the people are very friendly. The architecture in this town is beautiful in some places, the train station is stunning.

We only ever pass through here as a resting overnight place to sleep and refresh on a long journey from Portugal to Spain. However we always think that we would like to find the time to spend a few days here to explore the history of the place. It was once a very grand gateway to Portugal but since both Portugal and Spain joined the EU there is no boarder or frontier anymore and Vilar Formoso has declined. There is a very grand train station but we have never seen a train arrive or depart. I think the line is only connected to the Portuguese rail network. If there were trains running into Spain and the European network this could open up opportunities for Vilar Formoso. The most noticable thing about Vilar Formoso is the TIR truck stopover park where truckers rest up over the weekend or overnight. I like the place and I would love to find time to explore its history, and I wish Vilar Formoso and its people good luck for the future. Polish the diamond. Become a destination not just a stopover place.

Vilar Formoso is a frontier town and has historic importance. We have stayed here overnight on four occasions on our journey from Santander to the Atlantic coast of Portugal. The town is an ideal resting point for us. I always wish that we could spend a few more days here to explore the town more. I am sure we will one day.

This is the perfect overnight resting place if you are driving from Portugal up to one of the ports in Cantabria in North Spain. There are plenty of shops,bars and restaurants. There is a choice of hotels and rooms. There are a good range of banks here also. Really, it has everything you would want to find in a staging post.
