Interesting, authentic town/village, not touristy, but has plenty or restaurants. Many hikes and great bird watching, in the national park ,many rarities! 20 mins drive away is probably one of the best beaches in Portugal, on the Albufeira Tapada Grande if you like inland, quiet beaches.
Quiet town, not a place for retail therapy. Ideal centre for visiting the National Park for birdwatching and hiking. Castle, church and Islamic ruins well worth a visit. Lots of restaurants to choose from, all were good value for money and welcoming. We especially enjoyed the Ciga restaurant. Boat trips are available on the river.
I had a great experience, fantastic place to scape from the busy touristic areas. Small village where you can find beautiful views, fantastic welcoming people, great views, delicious food, and an amazing history: Roman and Árabe influences. You will not regret
Perfect area to roam around for a couple of days. Hiking trails. Museums. Restaurants. We drove around the beautiful area. We stayed for a weekend and had plenty of things to do and good restaurants.
Mértola is an ancient town, dating back to at least Roman times, full of interesting history, well worth reading up on by those interested. The castle and old church are open to the public and well worth a visit. It has its own charm, full of restaurants, many with traditional cuisine and really good value. The surrounding countryside is a mix of steppe grasslands, woodland and some fascinating rocky hills and gorges. I have a great interest in wildlife and in this area there are a number of rare birds, such as Great and Little Bustards, which can be seen in the steppe areas, especially early in the mornings. I was lucky to get some photos of the Great Bustard, see below. There are also Spanish Imperial Eagles breeding here, one of the rarest eagles in Europe and the rare Lesser Kestrel can be seen flying around the castle in the town.
Beautiful small city, breathtaking views, friendly people, good fairly priced food. We stayed at Alojamento Oasis in a perfect selfcatering room, with view over the Guadiana river. All for 20 euros per night!

The guest house felt like being home. All that was needed and more was provided for. Having some food items such as bread, cheese and meat was a great idea. Ana’s homemade jam was a special treat. The hosts responded quickly and were helpful in getting our car parked and acquainting us with the house. The location, being in the old town, was excellent for enjoying the tower and the museums.

We absolutely loved staying here. It's a beautiful full apartment, with all equipement you could dream off. It's very spacious and the place is so calming to sit outside with some view. There are some stores and restaurants in Mertola, but we also cooked at the place. There was even some food for breakfast when we arrived, which was very kind. We would 100% come back to relax.

All the little touches: the art, antiques, and the obvious care that went into modernizing an old typical village house. Great layout with lots of space for two couples, a well stocked kitchen including a good size refrigerator and freezer, and a lovely rural location just 20 minutes drive from Mértola. The cookies were a nice suprise too.

You better have a phone. There is no reception and the note with the number is on a different door than the hotel stairs, so you might look one place while a door is open at the actual hotel stairs. Not worth the confusion. Go somewhere where you don’t need to call if you aren’t there on time or you don’t know to look up the staircase.

Casa da Tia is a very nice guesthouse with an incredible atmosphere. The rooms are nice, the beds perfect, the lightning, wifi, ... very good. Staff helps out where they can, there is a restaurant nearby from the same owner, the view on Mértola (15 min walk) incredible and I appreciate the fact that we can use the kitchen.

The people running this hotel are quite nice. Very helpful. We like family-run places. Parking was easy to find. It’s also quite close to some wonderful eating establishments. Try the coffee at the shop at the bottom of the hill before going up to the castle, it’s wonderful!

The location of the house was nice, right in the heart of Mertola. The layout of the apartment was excellent, and we loved the terrace! Ana was available by text whenever we needed her. All in all, we loved staying in the house!

Awesome view of Mertola from the other side of the river Guadiana. Spacious and very well equipped room and kitchen. Comfortable very large bed. Plenty of storage space. Nice little pool. Very friendly staff.
Super nice, clean, and modern, with archaeological, dig and artifacts in the center of the hotel. Staff very accommodating and walking distance to Castle and historical sites. Breakfast spread was very lovely!

Excellent hosts and hospitality. This is a true hidden gem in Mértola. Located off the beaten bath it was absolutely wonderful for our family of four and we will certainly make a return visit.

One of the best views across the river to Mértola from the lovely (if a little cold) Swimming pool. Comfortable rooms, nice roof terrace to watch sunset/sunrise.
Beautiful place in a rural setting about 10 minutes outside of Mértola. Hannah was amazing - so helpful and kind. Pool was perfect on a hot day. Great stay overall.
