Food, Fado and Fun in Lisbon

Facing the Tagus River and built on seven hills, charming Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world. It offers unique tram rides, intimate Fado performances, great dining venues and much more.

The city is famous for its districts: the Belém's famous monuments; the Alfama's labyrinthine streets, bars and small shops; and the trendy Alcântara's docks. Lisbon’s most popular nightlife and shopping venues are located in Bairro Alto, while the traditional heart of the city beats rhythmically in the Baixa.

Enjoy a walk in the greenery of Jardim Botânico, admire the architecture of the Jerónimos Monastery or explore Feira da Ladra flea market. The Chiado area serves the city's best traditional Portuguese food. No meal is complete without some famous pastéis de nata!

Getting to the city centre is only a metro or bus ride from Lisbon Portela Airport. Whether you want a luxury hotel, a friendly guesthouse or a cosy apartment, Booking.com has plenty of accommodations for your holiday in Lisbon.

Our stay at Brown’s Central was wonderful. Couldn’t have found a better spot. We walked pretty much everywhere, using Bolt only a few times. Great location, friendly and helpful staff, great water pressure and comfy bed.

Lisbon is a great place to visit. Lots to see. I'd recommend a whole week. Make sure to factor a visit to Sintra & Pena Palace. I love the pastel de nata - so yummy! Lots of other treats too try out too. I'd definitely come again when I can.

Lisbon was totally chaotic even after the summer season was officially over there were still tourists everywhere and tuk tuks on every corner! Lots and lots to see in Lisbon and lots of different "districts" each with its own charm and interest. We didn't get a chance to ride on the funicular railway due closures on all lines after the accident and similarly, we weren't able to ride on the lift (which is of a similar age and is undergoing extensive checks and renovations), nor did we get a chance to ride on a tram so we would like to return at some point to enjoy those activities. If you are fit and can do so, the best way to see Lisbon and take photos is on foot with the use of Google Maps (the streets are very confusing so good luck to you if you can navigate using an old-fashioned street map!). We found taking photos from a tuk tuk extremely difficult and if you do take a tuk tuk tour (which we highly recommend), make sure you get a driver who has a microphone so you can hear the commentary over the traffic noise and the noise of the vehicle over the cobblestones!

Never rely on airport taxi driver.

Never rely on airport taxi driver. They may try to take a longer route. So be aware.. Prefer Uber instead; which is reliable and quick. Trip by a famous tram28 is a frustration, it is much better photographing it from the outside in narrow streets.

Lisbon is a lovely city painted in cobblestone, French balconies and colourful facades but most of all, delicious Pastes da Nata and Pao de Deus. The city felt quit, safe and is sprinkled with castles and lovely museums. We where happy to be able to walk off our overconsumption of pastries with lovely walks.

I arrived at the hotel three hours late after being stuck in the immigration queue at Europe's worst airport, Lisbon. At nearly 1am, the staff were amazing, and a very welcome sight. The room was really nice, breakfast was available from 4am, which was important as I wanted to get back to the airport at least 4 hours early. Location was perfect. Less than 5 minutes walk to Terminal 1. One of my best hotel experiences for quite some time.

Everything! The kindness of all staff was superb, the hotel was the best so far in my life based on value-price. It's not a luxury hotel, plain and simple, but based on the equipments and the kindness and comfortability it feels like a 4-5 stars hotel. Breakfast was also in big variety, tasty, fresh pastries and fit for the need.

The hotel is like a boutique hotel: my room was quirky and clean, it's positioned in one of the best spots of Lisbon, the patio is a real surprise and allows for quiet and peace in what can be quite a puzzling city. The breakfast is delicious with fresh food and coffee. A hidden gem!
