FAQs about hotels in Funchal

Portuguese Charm and Island Capital

Considered one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal, charming Funchal is the capital of Madeira Island. It is an important base for tourists from all over the world that come to the Madeira hotels, B&B’s and resorts to enjoy their cliffs and beaches, as well as its slopes and colourful towns.

Founded in 1424, its position allowed it to quickly become an important trading harbour, attracting many prominent families. Its mild weather was the beginning of its touristic development in the 18th century, with a therapeutic and health profile.

With the establishment of the port first, and Madeira International/Funchal Airport later, the city grew to become a major destination. Nowadays, the city concentrates most of the hotels, luxury resorts and casinos of Madeira. Accommodation located in Santa Cruz, near Funchal Airport, is also available for those wanting to avoid the rush.

Don’t miss a long walk around Sé historical district, and enjoy the Santa Clara Convent and the Sé Cathedral. The Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro Park and the Mercado dos Lavradores are also a must.

Whether you need an ocean-view villa or a small guest house, Booking.com offers a wide range of Funchal accommodation.

Everything was great, people were friendly and helpful,...

Everything was great, people were friendly and helpful, there were lots of attractions, beautiful gardens and water features. There were plenty of reasonably priced shops, supermarkets and restaurants, some were more touristy and expensive but genuinely offered an experience, so it was good to have plenty of choice. A favourite of my family were all the lizards on the rocky beach and in the parks - great fun to watch when it was sunny.

An interesting town, but VERY touristy.

An interesting town, but VERY touristy. Tourists everywhere, and businesses catering to tourists. Good base for exploring and car hire etc. As a hiker and swimmer, I think I might have preferred to stay somewhere smaller like Machico.

The down town of Funchal has a lot of touristy things to do.

The down town of Funchal has a lot of touristy things to do. However, it isn’t all that big and there’s only so many times you dan walk the oceanfront or the Avenida without it being repetitive. If you don’t have a car, going anywhere other than downtown is an issue. I didn’t want to drive there since it looked a bit crazy for me so we were fairly limited. And walking isn’t necessarily the best way around because everything is uphill on the mountain. You can take cabs at about €10 per ride but you have to have a plan for where you’re going. Luckily, it wasn’t my first time there so I’d done a lot of the touristy things before. Also, since I had business to attend to, being right downtown was a definite advantage.

We visited at end of September until 9th October the weather...

We visited at end of September until 9th October the weather was about 22-25 degrees. It was quite busy with tourists and a lot of traffic. We stayed in the Lido area and it was our first visit to the island it was about 1&1/2 mile walk into Funchal but easy walking on a wide footpath. There is a promenade that goes from the lido area all the way to camara do lobos and is a fabulous flat walk. You don’t need to hire a car for first visit - there are many different regular buses with loads of stops.

Everything was clean, the bed was comfortable, the view from my room was okay. Private balcony. Easy check-in/out. Very friendly staff! Great view from the pool down to the harbor. The cafe was very good with good prices. Free parking on the street (with good timing). Kitchen equipped for breakfast and basic cooking. Overall a very good location for exploring Funchal on foot if you don't want to stay in the busy old town or hotel quarter, but mind that the slope of R. de Santa Luzia and R. do Pina is very steep!

Location was perfect near to the bus stop to center (bus no 1,2 and 4) Also we could walk till the center of Funchal(2km). Hotel was very good and New years eve was fabulous. The new years gala dinner was also very good. We saw the fireworks from the roof top of the hotel. SPAR supermarket was near. Also property is near to Lido outdoor pool. Many shops, car rentals, restaurants are nearby. We enjoyed our 5 days in Madeira.

Except Andre from reception and some of valet service the majority of staf he was not cheerfull and sympathetic. The breakfast quality was not at the level of a 5 star hotel. Room cleaning was below average and superficial. In our first trip we are inthusiast at Savoy Palace ,this time is a big deception. We have saddened by such a negative change in one year. But in any case Madeira is a amazing island.

Place is located in the centre of Funchal Old Town, we had the little flat on the last floor, with kitchen and balcony, where we could eat and drink coffee. In the kitchen u have all u need to prepare food, even a blender! We also have a view on the ocean, what is always nice. In the building was a washing machine and dryer. Staing in this house u can feel like in your own flat, not a hotel.

Stayed at this hotel for a work trip to Madeira in February 2023. Excellent service from the staff, big room with a comfortable bed. Conveniently located, close to restaurants and not too far from the city center of Funchal. Cozy outdoor area with a pool.
