Wild and Wonderful Welly

Acclaimed for its thriving art, film and cultural scene, windy ‘Welly’ is enclosed by mountains such as Kaukau and Victoria on one side and the picturesque Wellington Harbour on the other. Wellington has the distinction of being the world’s southernmost capital city.

As the gateway to New Zealand’s magical south island, Queens Wharf is headquarters for ferry services across Cook Strait as well as in the direction of Eastbourne on the other side of the harbour.

Get your bearings by using the Kelburn cable car that starts at Lambton Quay and travels up to the Botanic Gardens and Carter Observatory with its sweeping views across the Miramar Peninsula and local bays.

Don’t miss a visit to New Zealand’s national museum, Te Papa, which also incorporates the National Art Gallery. Cuba Street offers a multicultural touch and includes the Wellington Night Market with an array of international cuisines. Ascot Street is a lively shopping precinct.

Scenery is lovely.

Scenery is lovely. Buses are frequent and the routes are varied and interesting. For example we took a #24 bus which travelled around the Bays, and a #14 bus which took us on a voyage of discovery! The Welington Museum, focusing on Wellington history is well worth a visit. Shopping was excellent. So many good restaurants to choose from.

Great city to walk around with lots to see, especially craft beer brewery crawl and great restaurants. We enjoyed the walk of the waterfront. More attractions if willing to drive. Downtown itself is not easy to navigate by driving, but worth it especially going to Zealandia.

You can catch the funicular up to the top of the Botanic Gardens, have a coffee at the cafe up there, then walk down through the gardens to the glasshouse and rose garden down the bottom. Te Papa is a great venue. We also enjoyed the Weta Workshop tour. A walk along the quayside would normally be nice but it was a bit cold and windy on the day we did it.

I have always liked Wellington whenever I have been, but this time there was so much building work and road works in the city centre, it was noisy and a bit chaotic. Walkways were blocked off and some normal accesses weren't available. I understand this work needs to be done, and hopefully next time we go it will be over with.

If visiting Wellington a visit to Weta workshops is a must, then head to Te Papa for a true appreciation of the work that Weta have done in making the of ‘Gallipoli’. Take the cable car & walk through the gardens & visit the museum. Finish the day with a yummy meal at a waterfront restaurant.

Great, attractive room and kitchen amenities. Excellent location for a pedestrian arriving from ferry shuttle (very short walk from train station dropoff). The nearby dedicated airport city bus at platform B makes for an easy, cheap ride to airport, or even other points in city. Not too far to walk from downtown. Nice to see a room with some interesting decor rather than stark black and white , I am so sick of blahck and grey. And a bathtub was so nice for a tired bod. Great bed.

Room was small, clean & cozy as expected but had a very comfortable Bed / Pillows. Good in-room tea / coffee facilities with its own Shower and would choose this room type again. View of the historic Wellington Train Station was a bonus. Great City Location, handy to Cook Strait Ferry's and local Buses / Trains. Have stayed at Hotel Waterloo on previous occasions and love the buildings Art Deco Charm.

It would be good if you offered a cheaper rate for people who are only using the hotel as a bed for 5 hrs. My family flew into Wellington at 11.50 pm and then left at check out time of 10 am. A reduced rate considering you are an airport hotel would have been better. We paid full price for 6 hrs sleep and didn't use any other hotel facilities.
