Rotorua is living proof of the magnificent, and sometimes mind-boggling, might of nature. Smoking hot springs, bubbling mud pools and fast-spouting geysers give the surrounding landscape an almost other-worldly feel.
This New Zealand city sits in the Waimangu Volcanic Valley, the world’s newest geothermal hotspot. It was created after the 1886 eruption that covered Te Wairoa Buried Village, between 2 of many lakes gracing this fertile terrain. By Lake Rotorua’s shores is the luxurious Polynesian Spa with its thermal pools. Just behind in Government Gardens are the city’s best cultural offerings: the Arts Village, Tamaki Maori Village and Rotorua Museum, in an elegant former bath house.
Native animals roam in Rainbow Springs Kiwi Wildlife Park below Mount Ngongotaha, accessible via the Skyline cable car. The views while ascending make it obvious why this is called the Bay of Plenty. Tikitere Thermal Park on the opposite side of the lake is known as Hell’s Gate, but as long as you can ignore the sulphuric smell, the spas are simply heavenly.
More springs are in Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve, whose surrounding forest is popular for mountain biking, and Wai-O-Tapu where the Champagne Pool is a striking mix of green and orange.

We had a short visit to Rotorua to bike in the forest and have a quick explore of the lakes. We were very impressed with the facilities, the Rotorua lake front is looking lovely with upgraded facilities since we were last here many years ago. We ate at Eat Streat one night . The main part of town is looking tired but parts are slowly getting facelifts, the lake perimeter and adventure tourism available is great. We biked the loop track at Whakarewarewa, walked around the Blue lake, visited Lake Okareka and walked to Jumping Rock, and walked along the Rotorua lakefront.Guest review bySarahNew Zealand - 8.0
Don't worry about going out of town to thermal sites when...
Don't worry about going out of town to thermal sites when you can walk around the lakeside and park and see geothermal action for free. There's also a wealth of street art around town mixed in with a great range of shops and cafes. The iSITE staff were very helpful with planning trips and activities and talked me through using local buses: they also called a taxi for me at one point. DEFINITELY do go to Mitai Maori Village's cultural evening. You might think it sounds expensive. I promise you it's totally worth it. I personally loved how quiet and non busy it was. There were alot of tourist in rotaroua especially at the (Skyline) one of the popular places which was very busy up there, If your interested in going but dislike busy day, I recommend you going at this specific time ( 4:30 - 5:00pm ). What gets me the most is the air smell of Rotoroa, which is quite very strong. Overall I like rotoroa and I would definitely come again.Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0

Rotorua is an incredible destination, blending natural beauty with unique cultural experiences. The geothermal activity is astonishing—visiting the geysers and hot springs is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The scent of sulfur can be strong at times, but you get used to it quickly, and it's part of Rotorua's unique charm. I loved exploring the Redwood Forest, which offers fantastic walking and biking trails surrounded by towering trees. Maori cultural experiences here are authentic and enlightening—the evening village tours and hangi feasts are not to be missed. There are plenty of adventure options too, like zorbing, mountain biking, and relaxing in the hot pools. The city is easy to navigate, with friendly locals and lots of cafes and restaurants offering a great variety. The receptionist was pleasant enough but the guy at reception was not very friendly. The accommodation was ok but somewhat flimsy. Especially the shower cubical tray did not feel sturdy enough. If someone who is a lot heavier than us was to use it, it felt like it could break. The mattress on the bed was lopsided and dipped in the middle so should be replaced.
