Right on Tyne was very clean, very homely, had everything we needed, and more besides for our overnight stay. There was parking right outside the door, it was walking distance to the town and the penguin colony. Violeta and Scott were excellant hosts and kept in contact with us - nothing was too much trouble. The Christmas tree was a lovely homely touch

+ Everything I needed for a stay on their property outside of central oamaru (10min drive) + Very quiet and comfortable lots of amenities in the cabin (cooking facilities, breakfast jams/condiments/bread/juice + Always nice to see a place offer fresh milk, and a generous 1L bottle (really sets the tone of how likely its put more thought and attention to detail, which this place does!) + Multiple heaters, electric blanket + Fun bathroom (double door, so rare!!! As not to disturb the guests in bed with the light directly shining so you can enter on both (corners). I think from reading reviews this also helps if you are renting the other cabin with no toilet just a stones throw away. The bathroom had all the necessities including shampoo, conditioner, aftershave, and a super warm TIMED fan heater!!! + Hairdryer, cable tv (limited channels), iron, broad games and books. Had everything I needed + Really responsive host, easy to communicate with on the platform , happy to make recommendations and gave thoughtful instructions and information beforehand + Animals on the property (including some cows and alpacas) be careful of electric fence not all were that obvious if you're not familiar with them

The kitchen area was so well done with efficiency and charm. There were cereal and coffee choices, lovely bread for toast with choices of condiments. We could have searched for eggs in the henhouse or picked veggies from the garden. I loved that the Schoolhouse was a lovely red and the interior red door had a chalkboard with the name. We loved driving the country roads to get there.

Oamaru is totally different from other towns we visited.

Oamaru is totally different from other towns we visited. The old Victorian centre and Harbour area is really interesting, full of galleries and quirky shops. There are a couple of breweries there but Craftworks is the best, like an old English pub. But it’s the Steampunk scene that is the weirdest and most interesting thing about Oamaru. There’s a great interactive must-visit museum. Allow at least two days so you can visit Elephant Rocks and the Māori rock paintings outside town and a castle on the way to Christchurch. The coastline between Dunedin and Oamaru is spectacular too. Don’t miss the Moeraki rocks.

I came for the Victorian Heritage Festival and to catch up with friends. I really love the historic precinct, the harbour and Gardens. They all have an old world charm. People are friendly. The St Patrick's Basilica is really worth visiting.

The heavy rain precluded too much driving around, but locating historical places was rewarding earlier on., With Labour Day celebrations, it meant most people were at home celebrating a day off (which was good) but not so much to participate in through the day. However a very good meal was enjoyed at Star and Garter down the road and I would thoroughly recommend visiting there.

I loved the Victorian quarter and the Steam Punk museum.

I loved the Victorian quarter and the Steam Punk museum. But my favorite was seeing the blue penguins arriving on the shore at the Penguin Sanctuary at the end of the wharf. Totally worth paying for premium seats.

We only stayed one night and did a whirwind tour.

We only stayed one night and did a whirwind tour. Steampunk to brewery to little blue penguins. Tees Street Cafe for breakfast and then we were off. I loved the quirkiness and historical charm and would like to go back. I think 2-3 nights would be more fun. Even 4 would be good. Everything close to each other though so still worth it for even 1 night. Magical!

the train, the old town, the seals the penguins. The Craftwork pub, the robot shop, the criterion, the kids playground, the farmers market...all doable in a weekend and all within easy walking distance. and a drive to Kakanui is worth it too

For a last minute booking when there was no accomodation left in Oamaru or Dunedin and the cost I wasn’t expecting much. My expectations were hugely exceeded, it was no problem for us to collect the key prior to check in time on our way though to Dunedin, the room was spotless (cleaner than some 5 star accommodation I’ve stayed in) and not dated. To top things off when we got back at 2:30am on a freezing cold night we found the heaters had been turned on in the room something so simple yet so thoughtful. Would 100% recommend!

The building looks more like a house than a hotel. There were many decorations in the house, especially decirations of penguins, which made it very lovley. The room was large and the bed was very comfortable. There was also a massage chair. The accommodation is also very close to all the major attractions in Oamaru.

The personal greeting by the staff was very much appreciated. The hotel was unique and really great, very clean and well cared for. We loved the querkyness of the hotel. We had a lovely stay and would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting a central place to stay in Oamaru.
