Although in general we have high requirements as guests, the drifter was the best hostel ever for us until now. The location is very convenient, walking distance to the centre. There are many places for socializing and good vibes. Even the kitchen, which is really busy sometimes, helps bringing people closer. Painting and free yoga courses are "plus".

Breakfast was a decent continental.the coffee in the breakfast room was not as good as the coffee in the conservatory. The room was beautifully designed with all that was needed. The history and beauty of the building have been loving incorporated into the hotel.

What a beautiful place! Amazing view from the room. It's very quiet and peaceful to stay here, getting completely relaxed with a great bottle of wine. The room is extremely clean and spacious. The bed feels like heaven. The staff is so friendly and professional. Thank you so much for the amazing breakfast it was the best!

Stunning Natural Beauty at Your Doorstep

Dusting itself off from a series of recent earthquakes is the seriously stunning New Zealand city of Christchurch. While its old English buildings like ChristChurch Cathedral are being rebuilt, the magnificent Botanic Gardens and Hagley Park sustain its reputation as the Garden City.

Located along the Avon River, NZ’s 2nd-largest city has Victoria Square at its centre. Surrounding highlights include the Canterbury Museum and the Gothic-style Arts Centre. Sumner Beach is a favourite location for locals when the sun shines.

Out towards the spectacular harbour town of Lyttelton is the Christchurch Gondola ride where you can enjoy a sweeping view of the city.

The South Island’s capital is a good starting-off point for extreme sports such as bungee jumping and white-water rafting. The majestic Southern Alps surround the city and offer world-class ski resorts such as Methven, at the foot of Mt. Hutt.

I lived in Christchurch twice before the earthquake.

I lived in Christchurch twice before the earthquake. This time I walked and used the excellent bus service. So many things to see. Great coffee shops. Excellent food. Very easy to access travel without a car. Stayed in Christchurch but had an historic train journey to Dunedin and an overnight stay in Akaroa. Walking always revealed surprises. New buildings and historic cottages helped me remember and add new experiences. Highly recommend the gondola ride. The staff and facilities at the new library were very helpful. The art museum (free) was worth visiting more than once.

This was just a quick trip, have visited Christchurch before & just love it & how it’s bounced back after the earthquakes. Love how they have developed the CBD & it’s very convenient that there’s lots to see so close to town.

Botanic gardens lovely and gondola views spectacular. Had a bit of trouble getting around without a functioning GPS in the car. Strongly recommended including a GPS if hiring a car or van to get around.

The highlight of this trip was Ferrymead.

The highlight of this trip was Ferrymead. Amazing historic village with exceptional exhibits, especially the fire engines and aircraft. Underrated and under visited in our opinion. In fact doesn't even rate a mention in the options below! The riverside market is nice but expensive. Try the suburbs for great value food and restaurants eg Riccarton.

We were very lucky to have hot weather so enjoyed walking around town and the botanical gardens. When we return at the end of our trip we’ll visit some galleries and museums. We loved the riverside markets for dinner.

The Earthquake Museum was, for me as a New Zealand, essential to visit...as we in the North Island had no real idea what the people were going thru. The videos etc show it clearly. The tram ride was relaxing and informative, you can go round as many times as you like in one day.

Absolutely loved the cottages. We had 2 side by side overlooking a beautiful little garden. They were private with no others looking into you. They were equipped with small kitchen space and had all the things you may need to make a quick meal. Carparking was provided onsite with no additional charge. Hosts were friendly and happy to assist in any way. Location is great to CBD and airport. We stayed 2 nights but would have been happy to stay longer and explore Christchurch more. Will definitely be coming back to stay next time I come to NZ.

We only had one night in Christchurch after our train ride from Karkori and I had no idea if this hotel would allow for at least some walking about at night. I could not tell from the map though it said it was close to the centre. It was well situated . We were able to.walk to the centre for a bite to eat at the OGB ie the old government building and arranged for the taxi who erupted us off to take us to the airport the best morning. A hood choice and we'll located. Jz

We stayed here on arrival and then again upon leaving Christchurch due to the times of our flights. We were given an upgrade to a room that looked like it had been refurbished in recent times- a much nicer room than one we stayed in at the same hotel pre-Covid. Very comfortable and clean. Soap products- Smith and Co were a great aromatherapy addition. Complimentary shuttle from airport for a flight coming in after midnight was also very appreciated.

The hotel is close to Christchurch airport and provides a free shuttle bus service. The room was a good size with all amenities, and quiet despite being adjacent to the main road from Christchurch to the airport. The restaurant/bar area was pretty basic in it's layout but the food was good without being exceptional. Staff were very friendly and efficient. The whole experience was better than expected and good value for money
