My wife's father had been born and spent his early years in Sneek before emigrating to South Africa in 1946 as a young man. In his lounge at home he had a picture of the Sneek Waterpoort that my wife grew up seeing every day. The sole reason for the trip was for her to see where he had grown up, and we wanted a hotel that had a view of the iconic Waterpoort. We were not disappointed! The hotel is 50m from the poort and the room was beautiful! Contemporary furnishings, very clean, with the most magnificent view of the Waterpoort and the town from the window and the balcony. Marcel, the owner and person we communicated with, was very helpful and gave us all the access information (security codes) we needed to get into the property. He also gave us some good recommendations for dinner (De Walrus Grand Cafe- excellent!) and breakfast (Royaal Belegd - also excellent and right next door to the hotel). He sent us a text with all the above information after we had spoken. We happened to meet him the next morning at the hotel and we chatted for a bit - a lovely man. We both enjoyed our stay at Hotel Hoogend and would highly reccommend it.

Sneek had a lot of beautiful buildings. The construction was a bit confusing for cycling. We walked in the downtown which we thoroughly enjoyed. We really liked the old Distillery that we found fascinating where the owner was so informative and we were able to taste a variety of liqueurs & whiskeys. The Walrus restaurant downtown was excellent that was recommended by locals.

Sneek was a single night stop on a bike tour, it is well situated for crossing the northern dam en route to Den Oever/ North Sea coast. The town seemed to have good restaurants and facilities that we viewed on our way out next morning.

It's a really nice cozy little town.

It's a really nice cozy little town. We loved walking around the canals and looking at the historical sights. One place to recommend for dinner is called Stoof, they do stews with tastes from around the world, the food there is really tasty and the service is awesome! You might want to book a place there if you're planning to come after 7 as it gets quite popular.

Sneek is very centrally located and is a great place to spend a few hours. It's also fun to explore the surrounding area, such as Bolsward and even Groningen. We saw so much. The roads are perfect and quiet. Combining it with a night or two in Harlingen is recommended, so you can also explore Vlieland, for example.

Sneek is a vibrant, beautiful city centrally located in the most beautiful part of Friesland. Bolsward, for example, is also beautiful but much smaller. It gets very busy during Sneek Week, which these days attracts many young people.
