The Best Culture and Nightlife this Side of a Canal

Jump on your city bike or hop on a canal boat and admire Amsterdam, the Venice of the North! The beautiful city houses, romantic bridges, iconic canals and street cafés create its unique atmosphere and give you an ultimate taste of its fascinating past.

Famous for its museums, most important of which are located in the Museumplein, Amsterdam offers you a chance to see unforgettable masterpieces by Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Mondriaan and more. The Anne Frank House is a sobering reminder of the city’s more recent history. After a lot of walking, the Rijksmuseum is a great place to rest and get some extra culture before visiting Amsterdam’s lovely Vondelpark.

The medieval Old Centre with the always busy Dam Square and the tempting Red Light District is the most visited part of Amsterdam. Make sure to stop at Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein, homes to the best nightlife venues.

Shop till you drop at Amsterdam’s most luxury shopping street, PC Hooftstraat, the most popular street market at Albert Cuyp or in the fancy design shops of the Jordaan district. Famous pancakes and frites with mayonnaise are a must-try! The more adventurous traveller might want to try the pickled herring, followed closely by a local beer.

All these attractions are just a short train ride from the Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. Whether you want to stay at a cosy hotel on a canal, a modern apartment in a quiet part of the city or a room in the centre of everything, Booking.com has a perfect accommodation for your Amsterdam vacation.

We loved walking beside the canals, seeing the sparkling water and the old houses. The museums are first rate. It was wonderful to see the paintings by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Van Gogh. I will not easily forget how it felt to stand in the Portuguese Synagogue. We ate in Mondi, a Caribbean restaurant, several times. We mainly walked everywhere, through Vondel park, but we did master the metro and the #2 tram.

A beautiful city, not only in the center.

A beautiful city, not only in the center. It is full of opportunities and programs. A big city, yet close to nature. Lots of parks, water, canals, beautiful. A very livable city. Good public transportation. Easy to find your way around. Worth returning to.

As first-time visitors to the city, we were not disappointed. It's a friendly city. Very easy to go by tram or bus to wherever you want to go. A lot of museums to choose from. The Van Gogh museum was amazing! In the center of the city you find bars, shops and churches next to each other. Easy to find restaurants and you must try the local food like 'Bitterballen'

I’ve visited Amsterdam twice now the streets are clean and you feel pretty safe walking about generally even at night time , there’s two sides to Amsterdam , there’s the red light area and coffee shops , then there is the museums , canals , shops good food and history , you just need a few days here , to really get the feel of Amsterdam , it can be expensive , so budget well , using the trains and trams will save a lot of money , using bikes can be a good way to get around or if you simply enjoy walking , few recommendations would be , body worlds museum if that’s your thing , definitely a boat tour around the canals , we always book the open boat on a nice day and it’s just beautiful , if your abit of a thrill seeker can go to a’dam outlook and go on a swing at the top of the building , and of course the Ann frank house , but this needs booking in advice you won’t get a ticket on the day

We loved the canals, the dancing houses, the people of Amsterdam, the amount of bicycles everywhere, the easy to use metro, and the open air markets. The only thing that we didn't care for was the subtle smell of marijuana in the streets around the Centraal Station. But that is part of the Amsterdam experience just like the canals!

Amsterdam is a must visit city as it has something for almost everyone (not seen much for children) I have now been about 8 times and each time I have a new experience as I uncover a part of the city I have not seen before. There is a hop on hop off bust tour you can take around the city but you must go to Anne Frank's house which is the top attraction in Amsterdam. Trams are everywhere so it is easy to get about and for those who want to feel the wind in their faces you can also hire a bike.

This hotel was right in the heart of Amsterdam city centre. With a 10 min walk to the central station, within 5 min walk to the red light district and many other tourist attractions it was a great location. The bed was very comfy and had a good view out onto the main street. The hotel had in the lobby a small fridge with a range of drinks for a fee including beer and also was attached to an Italian restaurant. The breakfast was very good too to grab some snacks before heading out.

Good transport links you can access to the hotel from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport via one direct bus. Also you can take Tram 7 to access to city centre very easily. If you walk you can take bus to Haarlem/City centre again. Supermarkets around, good kebab restaurants and sweet/baklava shops nearby. High speed internet speed. If you pay 10 euro per hour, there is early check-in/check-out option.

I have stayed in both the Hoxton's in Amsterdam and they are both lovely. This one is a bit further out, lovely building, nice rooms, great food. If you want to avoid the noise of the city centre but still have easy access to it then a great option. And a step above your usual corporate hotels.
