The Best Culture and Nightlife this Side of a Canal

Jump on your city bike or hop on a canal boat and admire Amsterdam, the Venice of the North! The beautiful city houses, romantic bridges, iconic canals and street cafés create its unique atmosphere and give you an ultimate taste of its fascinating past.

Famous for its museums, most important of which are located in the Museumplein, Amsterdam offers you a chance to see unforgettable masterpieces by Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Mondriaan and more. The Anne Frank House is a sobering reminder of the city’s more recent history. After a lot of walking, the Rijksmuseum is a great place to rest and get some extra culture before visiting Amsterdam’s lovely Vondelpark.

The medieval Old Centre with the always busy Dam Square and the tempting Red Light District is the most visited part of Amsterdam. Make sure to stop at Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein, homes to the best nightlife venues.

Shop till you drop at Amsterdam’s most luxury shopping street, PC Hooftstraat, the most popular street market at Albert Cuyp or in the fancy design shops of the Jordaan district. Famous pancakes and frites with mayonnaise are a must-try! The more adventurous traveller might want to try the pickled herring, followed closely by a local beer.

All these attractions are just a short train ride from the Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. Whether you want to stay at a cosy hotel on a canal, a modern apartment in a quiet part of the city or a room in the centre of everything, Booking.com has a perfect accommodation for your Amsterdam vacation.

Amsterdam is such a great place to visit.

Amsterdam is such a great place to visit. So much to do that you need to have many visits to pack it all in. So easy to get around, the options of trams, bikes or walking. Great museums, a visit to the oldest working windmills is a must, the Ajax football stadium tour was very good. Anne Frank Museum is another great part of history, just bear in mind this and the Van Gough museum you must book in advance with being super busy. This was my 8th visit there and I still find new places to explore. Amsterdam is a top city. So many great places to eat and drink. I would definitely recommend a canal boat trip too. My favorite location to stay there is in Leidsplain just a short stroll from Dam Square. Don’t forget to explore the Kings Palace, especially at Christmas time when they have an ice rink outside the Palace.

Loved the vibe and the bikers in the city.

Loved the vibe and the bikers in the city. Stayed at Stayotel Hostel in Vondelpark that was close to museums and trams. Canal ride, a must do, was a short walk from hostel. Did a food tour where we had raw herring, stroopwafel, bitterbern, etc., all Dutch staples with a great guide. Albertcuyp street market a great place for souvenirs and food - tasty cheese and apple pie.

Amsterdam is a beautiful and vibrant city with so much to see and do. The canals, architecture, and cozy cafés give it a really special charm. It’s easy to get around by tram, bike, or even just walking, since most places are well connected. People are friendly and helpful, and English is widely spoken, which makes things even easier for visitors. A few tips - bring comfortable shoes because you’ll walk a lot, and if you plan to explore by bike, stay aware of the traffic flow (locals ride fast!). Booking tickets in advance for popular attractions like the Anne Frank House or museums can save time. Also, the city feels very safe, even late in the evening, and there’s always a good spot nearby for coffee or a quick snack. Overall, Amsterdam is an amazing mix of culture, history, and relaxed atmosphere - definitely a place worth visiting again!

The city is enormous and we only scratched the surface in 2and 1/2 days. We arrived on the Eurostar which was nice and easy and caught a taxi from the station. Beware of this - we got totally ripped off as we arrived in the dark and didn't know where we were going. Got charged 45 euros for the privilege - we walked back to the station as it was barely a mile away. We found people very friendly and helpful and English is spoken absolutely everywhere. Would love to go back and do the things we missed and perhaps go further afield.

Amsterdam has something for everyone!

Amsterdam has something for everyone! If you are looking for culture and history, there are plenty of museums to explore. We went to the Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank House (book 6 weeks in advance to avoid disappointment) and the Rembrandt Museum. However, there are plenty more that we could’ve visited if we had more time! There was also fun and immersive experiences to be had at this is Holland, the ADAM tower - the VR rollercoaster and the swing are brilliant. We went in October and the weather was variable, so be prepared to wrap up and take waterproofs, but despite the rainy showers, none of this dampened our enthusiasm or joy. I would definitely come back to Amsterdam, it’s a great place to visit ( it’s easy to walk around, get the free ferry to explore the north side and the trams are easy) and the people are so warm and friendly. The Eurostar connection from London straight to Amsterdam is so convenient and the Park Plaza Victoria was ultra convenient, just being opposite the central station and despite this central location, it was quiet, and had that added benefit of a swimming pool and sauna, which was lovely to enjoy at the end of a busy day exploring the city.

We found the tourist part of Amsterdam very lively and interesting. Because we didn’t have our own transport, we did a few day trips from the railway station, which wea about a 15/20 minute walk from our hotel. We also did the hop on hop off bus, which was great. We saw parts of Amsterdam we wouldn’t have seen otherwise. unfortunately, we didn’t get to see some of the places we wanted to see, due to our limited time there.
