It was a beautiful property nestled atop a nice restaurant serving local produce. The flat was bright and spacious, it was incredibly quiet at night. Our best stay out of 18 properties we’ve stayed at over a month in Kyushu.

This small local hotel is nice and comfy. You can experience the local hotel in the little town like you are in the Japanese series. The room is spacious, bathroom is very new. Staff is very helpful, the nightshift lady cannot speak English but she tried her best to help us park our car nearby. Breakfast is a delicious Japanese set.

Mariko is an amazing host, very friendly, showed us around their farm and introduced us to their farming way of life. We chose to have dinner and breakfast and the food is very meticulous, healthy, delicious, and made with fresh ingredients. We also participated in harvesting shiitake mushrooms which was fun. We definitely recommend this place and would come again. Another very unexpected part of our stay is the tremendously beautiful scenic spots in Bungo-ono. Mariko introduced us to Todoro Bridge, Taizako Canyon, Harajiri Falls, and Fukoji Temple Buddha. There were no crowds and we were almost the only visitors. It was a phenomenal trip.

Auberge Koyama is a delightful place, recreating the rustic charm and comfort of southern France on Kyushu. We had 2 wonderful nights which included delicious meals in the French style prepared with great skill and attention using local seasonal produce. The host and his mother offer gracious and generous hospitality and we felt welcome and cared for. We enjoyed their company immensely and would love to return. We highly recommend a stay here to others. Location is excellent if you have a car.

Everything in Kuju Kogen Cottage surpassed my expectations - from the hospitality of the staff to the breathtaking view outside the window of my room! Mr Yosuke delivers exceptional service with a personal touch. For example, when he found out that we had difficulty booking a cab to get to the cottage, Mr Yosuke drove down personally to pick us up from the state. He was also very attentive to details, providing us with map and info about the Kuju mountains and arranging for taxi pick up when he found out that we were interested in hiking the mountains. The staff at the cottage were also wonderful and patient, and tried their best even though they may not speak fluent English. I love the food served, especially the bbq dinner which comprised generous chunks of quality beef. The room was top-notch, cozy with amazing views, same goes for the hot spring located within Kogen Cottage. It was a truly unforgettable stay:) We even extended our stay by one night!

The rooms are amazing little cabins that are cozy warm in the winter and very well designed. The bath is deep and allows you to feel like you are bathing in nature. The food in the restaurant was incredible. They adapted the menu for me to vegetate it was among the best meals I’ve had in Japan. The onsen is awesome too with warm baths that look out over the river. Magical! The fact they have a mixed section is great. Swimming costumes provided.

Taketa is an old historic town with very beautiful castle ruins on the outskirts of town. The views of the surrounding mountains from the castle are spectacular. It's a quiet place with an aging (and I think dwindling) population, so it feels good to be a tourist here to help the economy.

We used Taketa as a base for day hikes so didn’t explore the town much. The main town is compact and quaint with narrow little streets and a bit of a sleepy feel. To be fair, this was a Monday evening and not much was happening. Had one of the best meals in Japan there at a little French fusion restaurant called Champi (a break from Japanese). Amazing food (5-6 little courses), lovely owner/chef and very reasonable cost. Also plenty of wine options. Also used the public onsen - well maintained and old-school. I recommend it.
