Everything, really!! Perfect location opposite bus station and short walk to thatched houses area. Lovely view at back overlooking river. Family who run it are incredibly gracious and friendly. The couple wrote to invite us to check in early at 12.30 and offered us a free tour with their father! The food was unbelievably top notch. Wine/alcohol matching if you wanted. Everything had been foraged in the mountains or hunted by a family member, or prepared from first principles eg miso. All exquisitely presented and served in a beautiful room. We had a bedroom with bathroom facilities but there was an onsen-type bathroom for those who didn’t. Just perfect!!👌 watch your head though as building is old and door frames and beams very low!

The host and the staff are friendly. The starry sky is unforgettable. The host also recommended me the route of the visiting. There is fixed time for commuting between the bus stop and property, which is really a plus for me with large luggage in the snowy weather.

Very clean accomodation which has all the amenities you need. The bathroom and toilets were very clean. The bedroom was spacious and has heating, and the bed was also comfy. Naoki is very hospitable and responsive. We were very grateful that Naoki offered to drop us off to the bus stop when it was raining. We really enjoyed our stay here, thank you! I would highly recommend this place to everyone.

Clean and modern facility. Owner was clear and friendly. It is a Guest Inn, aka a Hostel, so expect accordingly. I feel it is a bit unfair that other reviews complain about gaps to a Hotel service, it is not a Hotel. Rooms are private but bathrooms and kitchen are shared. Showers were great and super clean. The kitchen area was well equipped and there were a few items for sale like instant noodles, chips and water. As it is not located in Shirakawa-go (where you go sightseeing as a tourist) the Inn offers a shuttle to Shirakawa-Go bus stop. This was really good! Without big luggage you could also walk there in 25 minutes.

Hello The hotel has impeccable service. The rooms were clean, the food was spectacular. The location is the best, very close to the trains. The hosts were very kind and respectful. I did not speak Japanese or English, but communication with the translators was sufficient. They helped us a lot at the reception. Without a doubt, when I return, I will stay at that hotel. Sincerely: Luz Marina Saenz, 62 years old. Colombian.

The rural setting, in a very old house, was fantastic, the quiet and darkness were great. I enjoyed the chance to milk a goat again! The hot bath was relaxing at the end of the day. I was also given the choice of breakfast, a dinner on my last night and a snack to send me on my way. Thank you.

Best hotels with breakfast in Shirakawa and nearby

Built as a traditional “gassho-zukuri” building with a thatched roof, Kanjiya offers a taste of old Japan. Rooms are simple, with heating facilities, green tea and shared bathrooms.

Partition rooms no sound proof can hear neighbours walking and talking. As u go in the room feel like go army camp🤣, after check out u have to take out bedsheet, blanket liner and pillow case for them. The advantage is they provide tru & fro shuttle service to station. Is ok for me just 1 night.

1 day experience is perfect.

1 day experience is perfect. The tourist site can be done in a few hours if your arrive before noon. Next is to enjoy a good hotel stay with onsen and their gourmet dinner onsite from late afternoon to night. Follow by breakfast and leave to next destination. There is a storage place next to the bus terminal if you have luggage to store for a few hours and check out tourist venue next to it before heading to the hotel. We chose to ship our large luggage from Tokyo to Kyoto via the Family Mart or Yamato shipping services from Tokyo.

It has beautiful views of the snow, river, mountains and of course the thatched roof houses. The air is fresh but it is difficult to find a restaurant because they close early. It is boring at night. It would be better if visitors just go to Shirakawa for a day trip and stay at Takayama.

Shirakawa-go is a beautifully preserved hidden gem, offering a glimpse into Japan’s rich cultural heritage. Walking through the village feels like stepping back in time, with its iconic gassho-zukuri farmhouses and serene atmosphere. No matter the season, the scenery is breathtaking—whether dusted in snow, surrounded by cherry blossoms, lush with greenery, or glowing with autumn colours. It’s a must-visit for anyone interested in traditional Japan.

Beautiful landscape with gassho buildings that are UNESCO heritage. There are quite a few museums open for tourists to get a deeper understanding of inhabitants who lived in these buildings many years ago. Many Souvenir shops and eateries... But most close by 5pm or 6pm. Limited dinner choices at night.

Shirakawa is a really gorgeous, serene village that we absolutely loved visiting. It almost felt unreal. Even though most of the restaurants and cafes were closed when we went (due to the season), it was lovely to just walk around and enjoy the sights.
