100 years old part of hotel is very characterful. The additions have made it quite a maze and it was fun finding the different 5 hot baths The outside rock garden hot spring nestled in the forest was the highlight and very enjoyable listening to the birds and watching the red leaves fall in the light breeze. I went to these baths in the evening and morning they were so relaxing. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

The staff hardly speaks English, despite the language barrier they were very nice and definitely helped us a lot with any request. The hotel is not suitable for those who have difficulty with stairs, there is no elevator and we had to change rooms to a more expensive room so that we would have fewer stairs, apart from this problem the rooms are lovely the view is wonderful and the food is great, everything is very clean and very pleasant

We enjoyed a relaxing night at ShimaBlue. We are a family of four with two teenage children and whilst it was tight, we enjoyed some relaxing time in nature. The ONSEN on the deck was the highlight. There is not much to do In the small town so this is a great place if you need a rest! The BBQ dinner was amazing (note you do cook for yourself).

Exceptional & best onsen experience at the heritage onsen bath. All 3 public onsen are beautifully crafted in old wood and very well maintained with their original status. Having visited many onsen in Japan, their largest bath was truly something that I would never forget. My 3D2N stay at Kashiwaya Ryokan was simply magical. The service staff were very kind and they would do their best to answer your requirements. There are 3 unique and clean private onsens to choose from which guests can visit as long as nobody is inside. The breakfasts and dinners were way beyond our expectations not just on the taste, but also the presentation which shows the genuine efforts of the kitchen staff. There is definitely no need to worry about being hungry as the meals filled us to the brim. The location is at one end of Shima Onsen town but there are bicycles which can be borrowed from the ryokan to cycle to the central area, as well as all the way to Lake Okushima if you are feeling adventurous. I hope the ryokan continues to maintain this standard as I would highly recommend people to stay there.

This is one of the best onsen I have ever been to. The place is located in a really peaceful place. We were welcomed by their kind staff and given us welcome tea and sweets. We have a family room which is really spacious. What I enjoyed most is our own private outside onsen which has a view of mountains and trees. The onboard meals are also SPECTACULAR! People might find the price a bit pricey but its all worth it! the experience is topnotch. If you will come via public transport, please note that there could be a bit of uphill walk from the bus stop. Other than that, it was a really lovely stay. It feels more like a retreat. Truly rejuvenating!
